Golf holidays in Portugal
Golf holidays in Portugal remain one of the most popular choices for UK golfers, and it is easy to see why. A short flight brings you to a country with a deep golfing heritage, a kind climate for much of the year and an exceptional spread of courses — from the famous fairways of the Algarve to the cliff-top links of the Lisbon coast and the dramatic golf of Madeira. With more than forty courses and nearly forty hotels in our programme, and packages from £205 per person, Portugal suits everything from a relaxed couple’s break to a full society tour.
Why Portugal for golf
Portugal’s great strength is variety within easy reach. The Algarve alone offers dozens of courses along a single stretch of coast, so you can play a different layout each day without long journeys. The weather is generous — golf is comfortable for much of the year, and the spring and autumn shoulders are superb. Short flight times, English widely spoken, good food and wine, and a price point that works for groups all add to the appeal. For many UK golfers, Algarve golf is the benchmark against which other destinations are measured.
The regions and courses
Our Portugal programme spans three distinct areas, each with its own character.
The Algarve
The heart of Portuguese golf. Among the courses we feature is the historic Penina Golf Course near Portimão, designed by Sir Henry Cotton and one of the Algarve’s original championship layouts, and Quinta da Ria & Cima near Tavira, a pair of clifftop and lakeside courses in the quieter eastern Algarve. The region’s resort hubs — Vilamoura, Vale do Lobo, Carvoeiro and Quinta do Lago — pack a remarkable number of quality courses into a short drive.
Lisbon & the Estoril coast
Rapidly growing in popularity for golf breaks, the Lisbon coast pairs excellent golf with history and city life. Oitavos Dunes at Quinta da Marinha is a celebrated coastal course near Cascais, while Troia Golf, a par-72 links by Robert Trent Jones Senior on the Setúbal peninsula, is one of the toughest and most natural courses in the country.
Madeira
For something different, the island of Madeira offers golf with spectacular Atlantic and mountain scenery, with hotels such as the Pestana Casino Park in Funchal as a base.
Where you’ll stay
Our Portugal hotels run from relaxed four-star resorts to landmark five-star properties. In the Algarve these include the Dona Filipa at Vale do Lobo, Tivoli Carvoeiro and the Hyatt Regency Vilamoura; on the Lisbon coast, The Oitavos at Quinta da Marinha. With thirty-nine hotels across the country, we can match the location and style to your group.
Best time to play
The Algarve is a near year-round golf destination, but the spring and autumn shoulder seasons — roughly March to May and September to November — are the sweet spot, offering warm, settled days and courses in peak condition without the heat of high summer. Winter remains a viable and popular choice for UK golfers chasing milder weather.
What’s included and how it works
Every Portugal holiday is tailor-made. A typical package brings together your hotel, a chosen number of rounds with green fees, and transfers arranged through our trusted local partner — with buggies, tee times and any extras handled for you. Packages start from £205 per person for golf and accommodation. We can also book flights if required: these are an optional ATOL-protected add-on, so you can arrange everything in one place or add flights to a ground-only package.

Frequently asked questions
Golf holidays in Portugal — answers to the questions our golfers ask most.
Which region of Portugal is best for golfers?
The Algarve is Portugal's most popular golf region and home to the highest concentration of top courses — Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Vilamoura and Monte Rei are all within an hour of Faro Airport. The Lisbon Coast is growing rapidly in popularity with outstanding courses including Oitavos Dunes, Aroeira and Royal Obidos, plus easy access to Lisbon city. Madeira suits those wanting dramatic scenery and a quieter atmosphere. We'll help you choose based on your preferred courses, budget and travel dates.
Do I need a hire car in Portugal?
For most Algarve golf holidays, a hire car is optional rather than essential. Many resorts — particularly in Vilamoura and Vale do Lobo — have golf courses and facilities on-site or within walking distance. We include private transfers from Faro Airport to your hotel in all packages, and can arrange inter-course transfers as needed. That said, a hire car gives you the freedom to explore the Algarve's beaches, villages and restaurants at your own pace — we're happy to recommend the best approach for your group.
Is there plenty for non-golfers to do in Portugal?
Portugal offers non-golfers a wonderful range of experiences. The Algarve has superb Atlantic beaches, historic Moorish towns like Tavira, excellent seafood restaurants and water sports. Lisbon — accessible from the Lisbon Coast courses — is one of Europe's most captivating cities, with world-class museums, vibrant food markets and stunning architecture. The Sintra palaces, Évora's Roman ruins and the Douro Valley wine region are all within reach. Portugal consistently ranks among Europe's favourite holiday destinations for very good reason.
Is the island of Madeira Portuguese?
Yes, Madeira is one of Portugal's two autonomous island regions, located in the Atlantic Ocean around 1,000km southwest of mainland Portugal and 570km west of the African coast. It shares the same language, culture and warm hospitality as the Algarve. Flights from the UK take approximately 3.5 hours. Madeira's golf is unique — dramatic clifftop and mountain courses, most notably Santo da Serra, which hosted the Portuguese Open multiple times. The year-round mild climate makes it a superb all-season destination.
Are flights included?
Our golf holidays are arranged ground-only — hotel, golf and transfers. You can add flights through us, and those flights are ATOL protected as part of your booking.
