GROUND-ONLY TAILOR-MADE, ATLANTIC LINKS COUNTRY

Portugal's number one course, an hour west of Lisbon.

Lisbon Coast golf holidays

Oitavos Dunes runs through umbrella pines and Atlantic dune to the sea, an Arthur Hills links rated the best in Portugal, with Praia D'El Rey up the coast and a room at Hotel Palacio Estoril when the round is done. Fourteen courses inside an easy drive, and the wind off the water to read.

The Lisbon Coast is one of Europe's most rewarding golf regions, and one of its most civilised. Within an easy drive of the capital you have the windswept links of Oitavos Dunes, the parkland calm of Penha Longa beneath the Sintra hills, and the Atlantic drama of Praia D'El Rey up towards Óbidos. Between rounds there is the old-world elegance of Cascais and Estoril, the wooded estates of Sintra, and a coastline that runs from city sophistication to quiet beach towns.

It is a place that rewards a considered itinerary rather than a packed one: a handful of genuinely good courses, comfortable transfers, and resorts that earn their keep. We pair the golf you want with hotels that suit how you like to travel.

We have arranged Portugal golf since 1981. Every itinerary is hand-built and hand-priced around your dates, your group and the courses you want to play.

Why play golf in Lisbon Coast

  • A short, varied collection of courses within easy reach of one another: true links at Oitavos, parkland at Penha Longa and Belas, and Atlantic clifftop golf at Praia D'El Rey.
  • A mild, playable climate with a long shoulder season, so spring and autumn give you ideal conditions without the high-summer heat.
  • Cascais and Estoril as a base: walkable, elegant towns with marina, beaches and restaurants, all within minutes of the first tee.
  • Sintra's UNESCO-listed hills, Óbidos's walled old town and the wide beaches around Tróia and Comporta, all reachable on a single trip.
  • Resorts that suit every style, from the grand Hotel Palacio Estoril to the dune-and-beach setting of Praia D'El Rey, with golf on the doorstep.

The courses you’ll play

The signature is Oitavos Dunes Golf Club at Quinta da Marinha, a genuine links laid through coastal pine and dune with the Atlantic and the Sintra hills as a backdrop, and one of the country's most admired layouts. Nearby, Estoril Golf Club is a classic, tree-lined parkland course with real heritage, while Penha Longa Golf Club sits in the cool, wooded estate above Sintra. Belas Clube de Campo offers a more sweeping, hillside parkland test on the Cascais side.

To the north, around Óbidos, Praia D'El Rey Golf Course runs spectacularly between pine forest and clifftop dune above the Atlantic, with Royal Óbidos Golf Club and CampoReal Golf Club at Turcifal completing the cluster. South across the river, the Aroeira Golf courses add wooded, umbrella-pine parkland to the mix.

Where you’ll stay

Cascais is the natural base. The Hotel Palacio Estoril brings grand belle-époque style, while the Grande Real Villa Italia, the seafront Hotel Albatroz, the Hotel Baia and the contemporary Vila Galé Cascais suit a range of budgets and tastes. The Pousada Cidadela Cascais, set within the historic citadel, is something more characterful again.

For golf on the doorstep, Onyria Quinta da Marinha Resort sits beside Oitavos, and Penha Longa Resort offers a serene retreat in the Sintra hills. North towards Óbidos, The Praia D'El Rey Marriott Golf and Beach Resort, Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Resort and the Dolce CampoReal Hotel at Turcifal place you on or near the fairways. South, the Aroeira Hotel and the Sesimbra Hotel and Spa open up the coast beyond the river.

Best time to play golf in Lisbon Coast

Spring and autumn are the Lisbon Coast at its best. From March to May the courses are green, the days warm and the wind manageable, while September and October offer settled, comfortable golf as the summer crowds thin. These shoulder months are when we send most clients.

Summer is warm and reliably dry, and the coastal breeze off the Atlantic keeps the heat civilised, though July and August are the busiest stretch along the coast. Winter is mild but noticeably cooler and quieter, with the occasional Atlantic front; the courses stay playable, but this is not a winter-sun destination in the way the Algarve or the Canaries are. Plan for spring or autumn if you can.

A sense of Lisbon Coast

History & heritage

This stretch of coast was where Portuguese and European high society came to take the sea air, and it still wears that history lightly. Estoril and Cascais grew as elegant resort towns, with the grand hotels, casino and seafront promenade to match. Just inland, Sintra is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of romantic palaces and wooded hills, while Óbidos to the north is a perfectly preserved medieval walled town, its whitewashed lanes climbing to a castle.

The region rewards curiosity: a morning round and an afternoon wandering Sintra's estates, or an evening in Óbidos, sits naturally within a golf trip here. We can build that rhythm into your days.

Food & wine

The Lisbon Coast eats well and unpretentiously. Cascais and Estoril are full of seafood: grilled fish straight off the Atlantic, clams, and the local catch served simply with good olive oil and a glass of vinho verde. Pastéis de nata and a strong coffee are the regional ritual, and worth the calories.

Wine is a genuine draw, with the Lisboa region and the estates around the capital producing characterful reds and crisp whites. Óbidos is known for its ginjinha, a cherry liqueur traditionally served in a small chocolate cup. Whether you prefer a marina-side table in Cascais or something quieter inland, the eating here is a pleasure rather than an afterthought.

Beyond the fairways

There is plenty to fill the non-golf hours. Sintra's palaces and gardens are an easy half-day from Cascais, and the drive out to Cabo da Roca, mainland Europe's westernmost point, is worth it for the cliffs alone. The walled town of Óbidos pairs naturally with the courses to the north.

Cascais itself rewards a slow afternoon: the marina, the beaches and the old town. South across the river, Sesimbra and the beaches of Tróia and the Comporta dunes offer a wilder, quieter coast. Lisbon, with its museums, miradouros and trams, is close enough for a city day. We can weave any of this around your tee times.

Getting around & exploring

A hire car is the simplest way to enjoy this region, given how spread out the courses are, from Cascais to Óbidos in the north and Aroeira in the south. Distances are modest and the roads are good, with the A5 motorway linking Lisbon to the Cascais coast in around half an hour.

If you would rather not drive, we can arrange private transfers between your hotel and each course, and to and from the airport. The Cascais-to-Estoril stretch is walkable and well served, but reaching Praia D'El Rey, Royal Óbidos or the courses across the river really does call for a car or pre-booked driver. We will set up whatever suits your group.

Getting there

The Lisbon Coast is served by Lisbon (Humberto Delgado) Airport, with frequent flights from across the UK and Ireland and a short onward drive to the coast: roughly 30 to 40 minutes to Cascais and Estoril, a little over an hour up to the Óbidos resorts, and a similar run south to Aroeira and Sesimbra.

Flights are not included in our prices. We arrange your golf, hotels and transfers on the ground, and can add flights as a separate, ATOL-protected option if you would like us to handle them, or you are welcome to book your own. Either way, we will time everything around your arrival and departure.

Good to know

  • We are ground-only specialists: golf, hotels and transfers are arranged for you, with flights available as a separate ATOL-protected add-on, never bundled in.
  • Spring and autumn are the prime seasons; pack for Atlantic breezes on the coastal courses, especially at Oitavos and Praia D'El Rey.
  • The courses span a wide area, so a hire car or our private transfers make the trip far easier, particularly for the Óbidos and Aroeira clusters.
  • Cascais and Estoril make the most convenient and characterful base, with golf, beaches and restaurants close together.
  • Sintra, Óbidos and Lisbon are all within easy reach for non-golf days, so this suits mixed groups and couples as well as dedicated golfers.
  • Every itinerary is hand-built and hand-priced around your dates and your group; tell us the courses you want to play and we will shape the trip around them.

Frequently asked questions

Golf holidays in Lisbon Coast — answers to the questions our golfers ask most.

How much does a golf holiday in Portugal cost?

Golf holidays in Portugal start from £205 (≈ €235) (≈ $265) (≈ CA$375) (≈ AU$385) (≈ NZ$465) (≈ CHF 215) pp with Golf Planet Holidays. That is a tailor-made ground package, and the final price depends on your hotel, the courses you play and the season.

Which region of Portugal is best for golfers?

The Algarve is Portugal's most popular golf region and home to the highest concentration of top courses — Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Vilamoura and Monte Rei are all within an hour of Faro Airport. The Lisbon Coast is growing rapidly in popularity with outstanding courses including Oitavos Dunes, Aroeira and Royal Obidos, plus easy access to Lisbon city. Madeira suits those wanting dramatic scenery and a quieter atmosphere. We'll help you choose based on your preferred courses, budget and travel dates.

Do I need a hire car in Portugal?

For most Algarve golf holidays, a hire car is optional rather than essential. Many resorts — particularly in Vilamoura and Vale do Lobo — have golf courses and facilities on-site or within walking distance. We include private transfers from Faro Airport to your hotel in all packages, and can arrange inter-course transfers as needed. That said, a hire car gives you the freedom to explore the Algarve's beaches, villages and restaurants at your own pace — we're happy to recommend the best approach for your group.

When is the best time to play golf in Portugal?

Spring and autumn, roughly March to May and September to November, are best, and the Algarve's mild winters make it a year-round escape.

How many golf courses are there in Portugal?

We feature 44 courses and 54 resorts across Portugal including Quinta do Vale and Ribagolfe. Your specialist matches the courses to your group's standard and budget.

Is there plenty for non-golfers to do in Portugal?

Portugal offers non-golfers a wonderful range of experiences. The Algarve has superb Atlantic beaches, historic Moorish towns like Tavira, excellent seafood restaurants and water sports. Lisbon — accessible from the Lisbon Coast courses — is one of Europe's most captivating cities, with world-class museums, vibrant food markets and stunning architecture. The Sintra palaces, Évora's Roman ruins and the Douro Valley wine region are all within reach. Portugal consistently ranks among Europe's favourite holiday destinations for very good reason.
