About Santo da Serra Golf Course
Madeira Clube de Golf Santo da Serra is a Robert Trent Jones design in the clouds! This excellent 27-hole course is made up of 3 loops of nine holes and is high in the mountains. Your ball may fly further but beware the many dangers! With many bunkers and thick rough, the short yardage suddenly becomes a tricky challenge... Particularly when the wind blows. Don't forget to take your camera as the 12th and 13th holes are real gems. 17 miles north-east of Funchal.

Our take
Robert Trent Jones built Santo da Serra high in Madeira's clouds, where the ball flies further but the wind, thick rough and bunkers take back every yard the altitude gives you.
- Serious golfersThe card says short but the course never plays that way. Judging club with mountain air under the ball and wind across it is the whole game here, and the thick rough gives nothing back.
- Higher handicapsTake more balls than you think you need. The bunkers are everywhere, the rough is genuinely punishing, and when the wind gets up the sensible play is the middle of every green.
- CouplesTwenty-seven holes up in the clouds, with the 12th and 13th worth the trip on their own. Bring the camera, take your time, and treat the golf as the excuse rather than the point.
