About Old Golf Course
The Old Course is the second oldest golf course on the Algarve and laid out by the great Frank Peninck and later remodelled by Martin Hawtree. It's where Vilamoura all began. It’s long been the Algarve favourite and it’s easy to see why.
A very attractive golf course with a variety of different holes you need a bit of length but above all a good strategy. Take your camera and enjoy the challenge and several signature holes – particularly around the turn and the 17th and 18th.

Our take
Vilamoura began here, and the Old Course has long been the Algarve favourite for good reason.
- Serious golfersPennink asks for a bit of length and a lot of thought, and the stretch around the turn holds the signature holes. Oddly, the two holes that ruin most cards are the 1st and the 18th, so arrive warmed up and finish concentrating.
- SocietiesAn obvious pick for the week's main event. Par 73 with real variety hole to hole, gentle walking, and a name everyone in the group already knows. Prize giving conversation writes itself after that closing hole.
- Higher handicapsYou need some length here, and the opening hole gives no time to ease in, so do not judge your day by the first card entry. Water only threatens now and then, which keeps the ball count respectable.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 59 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually north-westerly, averaging 14 km/h, gusting to 38. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 11 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
