In a modern twist of a traditional recipe, cacti and wild herbs replace the role of Sunningdale’s heather, spartan Holm oaks and ancient olive trees take the place of a lush English woodland, and desert scrub bunkers of crushed limestone replace Berkshire’s sandy tracts in a golf course that revels in the classic principles of strategic play.

Faldo swapped Sunningdale's heather for cacti and wild herbs here, and the course asks for your brain long before your driver.
- Serious golfersThe line off the tee matters more than the yardage; Faldo's bunkering and the scrub either side punish anything loose, and there is usually enough breeze about to make club selection a real decision.
- Higher handicapsIt is a flat, easy walk with no climbing to speak of, but be realistic about the score; water turns up far more often than you expect and the cacti keep whatever the lakes miss.
- Buddy tripsAmendoeira makes an easy Algarve base and the Faldo is the round your group will argue about afterwards; nobody quite cracks it first time, which is half the fun.
