About Terras da Comporta Dunas course
The word is out on Terras da Comporta Dunas golf course, the stunning new creation near Lisbon, Portugal. Opened in October 2023, this outstanding design by David McLay-Kidd, has already been named as the World's and Europe's Best New Golf Course at the 2023 World Golf Awards. It is already numbered ninth in the Top 100 Golf Courses in Continental Europe 2023/24, the highest ever ranking for a new golf course.
Just over an hour from Lisbon, Terras da Comporta Dunas runs along the Atlantic coastline. The links course makes the most out of the beautiful natural setting to create a challenging par-71 layout. There are six tees on each hole so players can find their own level, opting for either a relaxed game or a true test as they plot their way around the 84 hectares. There's a 50-bay driving range to prepare yourself for the game and an attractive clubhouse to relax in and muse over the day.
Be ready for the second 18-hole golf course, deisgned by Sergio Garcia, which will open early next year.

Our take
The noise around Comporta Dunas is justified for once: David McLay-Kidd's new links went straight in at ninth in Continental Europe's Top 100, the highest entry any new course has managed.
- Serious golfersPlan the Portugal trip around this tee time; it is genuine links golf an hour or so from Lisbon, and with not a single water hazard on the card, the steady coastal breeze is the examiner.
- Higher handicapsDo not be put off by the ranking; there is no water to swallow a ball, the ground is dead flat to walk, and a links lets you play along the turf when the breeze gets up.
- Buddy tripsEvery group needs one round that everyone still talks about in January, and in Portugal right now this is it. Put it early in the itinerary, because half the group will want to play it again.
