England golf holidays

East Sussex National's East Course held the European Open in 1993 and 1994, the same Bob Cupp fairways Faldo and Els once walked, and it's yours for a long weekend. Pair it with the pines and beech at Forest Pines in Lincolnshire, or the parkland and lake at Carden Park in Cheshire, and the whole thing sits inside a morning's drive. England is golf the way the game was meant to be played: heather-edged heathland, wind-tested links and grand parkland estates, all within a short drive of each other. From the resort fairways of The Belfry near Sutton Coldfield to the timeless links of Norfolk and the Wirral, this is a country that rewards golfers who want variety in a single trip. You can play a Ryder Cup stage one day and a hidden seaside gem the next, then return to a country-house hotel for dinner.

We have arranged England golf since 1981. Every itinerary is hand-built and hand-priced around your dates, your group and the courses you want to play.

Why play golf in England

  • Three golf landscapes in one country — heathland (Woburn, Hollinwell), links (Hoylake, Hunstanton, Wallasey) and resort parkland (The Belfry, Carden Park, Slaley Hall).
  • Ryder Cup and Open pedigree — The Belfry's Brabazon legacy and Royal Liverpool (Hoylake), an Open Championship venue.
  • Short transfers between clusters — the Wirral, Norfolk coast and Midlands resorts each group several fine courses tightly together.
  • Stay-and-play resorts — Forest Pines, Belton Woods, Forest of Arden and Old Thorns combine championship golf with spa and dining on site.
  • Hand-picked by us — we know which clubs welcome visiting groups and how to sequence them, drawing on relationships built since 1981.

The courses you’ll play

England's strength is range. On the Wirral and Merseyside, you can pair Hoylake (Royal Liverpool) with Wallasey, Heswall, Caldy and The West Lancashire for a links-rich week, then add Formby Hall's Championship Course for resort comfort. In the Midlands, The Belfry, Forest of Arden, The Warwickshire (Kings & Earls) and the three Woburn courses — The Marquess', The Duke's and The Duchess' — make a heathland-and-resort heartland.

The Norfolk and Suffolk coast offers Royal Cromer, Sheringham, Hunstanton, Dunston Hall and Stoke by Nayland's Constable Course, with Thorpeness nearby. Inland heathland classics include Hollinwell (Notts Golf Club) and Fulford near York, while Ganton, Alwoodley and Sand Moor anchor a fine Yorkshire trio. In the South East, Dale Hill, Crowborough Beacon and Cooden Beach round out a varied East Sussex base.

Where you’ll stay

England's resort hotels let you sleep and play in the same place. The Belfry Hotel and Resort near Sutton Coldfield is the natural Midlands base, with Forest of Arden near Solihull and The Warwickshire close by. For the North East, Slaley Hall near Hexham sits among forest fairways; in Cheshire, Carden Park pairs golf with a country estate.

On the East coast, Forest Pines in Lincolnshire, Belton Woods near Grantham and Dunston Hall near Norwich combine course and spa, while Thorpeness Golf Club & Hotel and Old Thorns in Hampshire suit golfers who want everything on the doorstep. In Merseyside, Formby Hall Golf Resort and Spa Hotel is ideal for a Wirral links week; Dale Hill and East Sussex National serve the South East.

Best time to play golf in England

England golf is a summer game. The season runs roughly May to September, when the days are long, the turf is at its best and the famous English summer evenings let you play late into the day.

Late spring and early autumn are the connoisseur's choice: courses such as Woburn and Ganton are in fine condition, greens run true, and the heathland and links show their colours. High summer brings the warmest, driest weather and the most reliable conditions across the country.

Winter is cool and often wet, and many parkland courses soften considerably, so we steer most England itineraries to the brighter half of the year unless you're set on a particular off-season window.

A sense of England

History & heritage

England wears its golfing history lightly but deeply. Royal Liverpool at Hoylake is one of the game's great Open Championship links, and The Belfry is woven into Ryder Cup folklore through the Brabazon Course. Woburn, set on a ducal estate, and the heathland of Hollinwell speak to an English tradition of golf laid through heather and pine.

Beyond the fairways, this is a country of cathedral cities, market towns and stately homes. A York-based trip pairs Fulford with the city's medieval streets and Minster; a Norfolk week mixes Royal Cromer and Sheringham with flint villages and big coastal skies. The clubhouses themselves — many over a century old — carry their own quiet sense of occasion.

Food & wine

English country-house dining has come a long way, and golf resorts have moved with it. Expect modern British cooking built on regional produce: game and beef from the Midlands and Yorkshire estates, fish and seafood along the Norfolk and Suffolk coast, and proper traditions like Sunday roast and afternoon tea.

Resorts such as Carden Park, The Belfry and Old Thorns offer relaxed brasserie meals and more formal restaurants under one roof, ideal after a full day's golf. On the coast, a base near Thorpeness or Stoke by Nayland puts you within reach of Suffolk's celebrated food scene. England's revival as a wine producer means good English sparkling now appears on many lists — a fitting toast to a fine round.

Beyond the fairways

England gives non-golf days plenty to do. From a Midlands base near The Belfry or The Warwickshire, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick Castle and the Cotswolds are within easy reach. A Yorkshire trip around Ganton, Alwoodley and Sand Moor opens up the Dales, York's historic core and the North York Moors.

On the Wirral and Merseyside, Liverpool's waterfront, galleries and music heritage make a strong contrast to a day's links golf at Hoylake or Wallasey. The Norfolk coast around Royal Cromer and Hunstanton offers wide beaches, nature reserves and seaside towns, while Slaley Hall near Hexham sits close to Hadrian's Wall and the Northumberland countryside. Spas at the resort hotels make for an easy rest day.

Getting around & exploring

A hire car is the most practical way to enjoy England golf, especially when linking courses in a cluster — the Wirral links, the Norfolk coast or the Midlands resorts each reward easy car access. Distances within a region are short, and most resort hotels have ample parking.

For groups, we can arrange private transfers and driver-guides so nobody has to take the wheel after a long lunch. England's motorway network connects the Midlands, North and South quickly, while the rail system links major cities — handy if you're combining golf with a city stay in York, Liverpool or London. We'll advise the simplest set-up for your chosen courses and base.

Getting there

England is exceptionally well connected, with major airports including London (Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton), Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds Bradford and Newcastle — so wherever your golf cluster sits, an airport is rarely far.

Flights are arranged separately as an ATOL-protected add-on; they are never bundled into the golf itinerary, which keeps your trip transparent and lets you fly from the airport that suits you best. We'll match arrival airports to your chosen base — Manchester or Liverpool for the Wirral, Birmingham for the Midlands resorts, Newcastle for Slaley Hall, or a London airport for the South East and East Anglia — and time transfers around your first tee.

Good to know

  • Ground-only specialists — we arrange your hotels, golf and transfers; flights are a separate ATOL-protected add-on, never included.
  • We are not ABTA members — our trade credentials are ATOL (flights only), PTS and IATA.
  • Climate — a summer game (roughly May–September); cool and often wet in winter, so plan for the brighter months.
  • Pack layers and waterproofs — even in summer, coastal links at Hoylake or Hunstanton can be breezy.
  • Tailor-made — every England itinerary is hand-built and hand-priced around your dates, group and the courses you want to play.
  • Since 1981 — we know which clubs suit visiting golfers and how to sequence a trip; ask us and we'll hand-pick the right base and courses.
