Stay & play — fromAbout Alwoodley Golf Club
Alwoodley Golf Course is a delight to play and visit. The design of the course launched the career of Dr Alister MacKenzie who went on to create Augusta. Lengthened to nearly 7,000 yards Alwoodley remains true to his original design. On Wigton Moor this heathland course runs almost straight out and back. The inward nine are regarded as tougher as most holes are played into the prevailing wind. The springy fairways cut through heather and gorse with tricky bunkers and large greens. Golfers are spoilt for choice in this beautiful part of Yorkshire.

Our take
Before Augusta there was Alwoodley, the design that launched Alister MacKenzie, and it still plays close to his original intent at nearly 7,000 yards.
- Serious golfersScore going out, because the inward nine turns back into the prevailing wind and is regarded as the tougher half. The 3rd catches players cold and the 17th ruins cards late.
- Higher handicapsHeather and gorse either side of springy fairways will swallow anything wild, and a back nine into the wind stretches every club. The ground itself is kind though, barely 75 metres of climb all round.
- Buddy tripsAn out and back moorland layout, so matches tend to turn at the turn when the wind arrives. Play it fresh rather than as the last round of a tired week.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 75 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually westerly, averaging 13 km/h, gusting to 41. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 16 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Dr Alister MacKenzie.
The holes that will cost you. The 3rd, the 17th and the 12th. The 12th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
