ABOUT THE GOLF COURSE
The West Lancashire is the oldest golf club in the county. It's a true links course, posing a challenge for even the most proficient golfer. It's an Open Championship Final Qualifying course, co-host for the Amateur Championship in 2009 and also the venue for the British Girls Championship in the same year. Our take
The West Lancashire is Open qualifying golf at the Liverpool end of the Southport links corridor, flat to walk and hard to read first time out.
- Serious golfersOpen Final Qualifying golf with everything that implies: plateau greens, greens in dells, blind shots, and more water in play than you expect on a links. The 11th and 16th are the round's reckoning.
- Higher handicapsBarely 30 metres of climb all round, so the walk is easy. The scoring is not: blind holes and perched greens cost strangers shots, so treat the first visit as reconnaissance rather than a medal.
- Buddy tripsThe oldest club in Lancashire and the natural southern anchor of the great Southport links run. Slot it into a trip with Hesketh, Formby Ladies and Southport and Ainsdale and argue about which was best.

The wind. The wind is usually westerly, averaging 14 km/h, gusting to 53. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
