Wallasey Golf Club on The Wirral is the birthplace of the Stableford points scoring system. Today it is a fantastic links course with glorious views out to sea. Member Dr Frank Barney Gorton Stableford created the Stableford system out of frustration with the bogey system. The strong winds at Wallasey made nonsense of this style of scoring when players were unable to reach the greens of the long par 4s in regulation. Wallasey held the first Stableford competition on 16 May 1932 and it was an instant success.
Subject to many improvements since it first opened in 1891, three new holes, designed by Donald Steel, were introduced for play in 2004.

Our take
Stableford scoring was invented at Wallasey because the wind kept making a nonsense of bogey play, and that wind has not gone anywhere.
- Serious golfersThe long par 4s that pushed Dr Stableford into devising his points system still refuse to be reached when it blows. The 9th and 13th settle most cards, and into the wind par there is a triumph.
- Buddy tripsPlay it as a Stableford, obviously, on the course where the format was born. The sea wind is the whole defence, so agree your shots honestly and expect the points to swing wildly between rounds.
- Higher handicapsStableford exists because this course wrecks medal cards, which is oddly reassuring. Pick up when a hole goes wrong, keep the ball under the wind, and the flat walking at least keeps your legs fresh.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 58 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually westerly, averaging 16 km/h, gusting to 52. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 1 hazard in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Donald Steel.
