• Serious golfersCharles Lawrie's pine corridors ask for every shot in the repertoire. At 6,651 yards it is shorter than the Duke's, but the rolling fairways and subtle contours punish anything loose off the tee.
• Higher handicapsFlat underfoot, so the legs are never an issue here; it is the trees that do the damage. Aim for the widest part of the fairway, accept the odd chip-out sideways, and you will get round.
• SocietiesThree courses on one estate, buggies and trolleys on hand, and a clubhouse with restaurant and spa make this a straightforward group venue. The flat, tree-lined Duchess is an easy course to build a society day around.
