Heswall Golf Club on the Wirral peninsula provides a championship course with breathtaking views across the Dee Estuary. Jack Morris was the original designer in 1902 with Harry Vardon, Frank Pennick and Donald Steel contributing improvements over the years. At 6837 yards off the back tees it's an impressive challenge as you head down the well-maintained fairways. In 2017 six greens were completed to USGA standard and the practice facilities are exceptional.
- 14 miles north of Chester and 10 miles from Liverpool
- Play with Wallasey and Hoylake (Royal Liverpool) Golf Courses
- Modern 12-bay driving range
- Welcomg clubhouse
Our take
At 6,837 yards off the back tees, Heswall gives you a full day's work with the Dee Estuary watching over every shot.
- Serious golfersOff the backs it is a genuine examination, exposed to whatever blows up the estuary. The 5th and 9th are the two that decide the front nine, and the greens rebuilt to USGA standard run true.
- Higher handicapsPlay it forward. At full stretch the length will grind a mid handicapper down, but from sensible tees it is a well kept parkland course that lets you play golf rather than merely survive it.
- SocietiesThe practice facilities are excellent, so build a warm up hour into the day. The ground rolls gently rather than climbs, an easy enough walk for a mixed group, and the estuary views hold up all round.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 84 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually westerly, averaging 14 km/h, gusting to 46. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. Water is very much in play across this course. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Jack Morris.
The holes that will cost you. The 9th, the 5th and the 12th. The 9th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
