• Serious golfersThe contoured greens ask proper questions, and the 4th and 10th are where good cards go wrong. With over 150 metres of climb across the round, it plays longer than the card suggests.
• Higher handicapsDry-stone walls cut across some fairways and the fifth drops a hundred feet from tee to green. Commit to your club, avoid the handful of ponds, and there is a decent score out there.
• SocietiesA characterful day for southern England groups, with the sheep-walk history and dry-stone walls giving it a flavour of its own; the climb is honest but manageable, so most of the party will walk.
