Water is the whole story at Chipping Sodbury, a flat Fred Hawtree parkland below the Cotswolds that is easy on the legs and expensive for anyone spraying it.

• SocietiesNot a slope worth mentioning, so a full day of golf is no hardship, and the big greens keep groups moving. With water threatening on so many holes, the prizes are rarely settled early.
• Higher handicapsGentle underfoot, but Hawtree strung water across hole after hole and several greens sit above you, so a timid approach comes back off the front. Take enough club and plenty of balls.
• Buddy tripsAn easy, sociable round twelve miles from Bristol, with the pretty old town of Chipping Sodbury next door and a light, airy lounge waiting afterwards. Solid parkland golf rather than a headline act.
