FOUR RYDER CUPS, ONE SHORT DRIVE

Play the 18th that decided four Ryder Cups.

Central England golf holidays

The Brabazon at The Belfry has hosted the Ryder Cup more often than any course on earth, and that water carry on the last is yours to take on for the day. Pair it with the Warwickshire's Kings and Earls, or the woodland fairways of Forest of Arden near Solihull, and you have a long weekend's golf an hour up the motorway rather than a flight away.

4.9 from real golfers · 7 courses · from £245pp (≈ €275) (≈ $315) (≈ CA$455) (≈ AU$455) (≈ NZ$555) (≈ CHF 255) · ATOL-protected where flights are added

Two nights at Belton Woods near Grantham starts at £245 (≈ €275) (≈ $315) (≈ CA$455) (≈ AU$455) (≈ NZ$555) (≈ CHF 255) per person, and from there you can string together a few days of golf across Lincolnshire, Warwickshire, Norfolk and Suffolk without ever needing a passport. Central England is the part of the country where a good golf hotel often sits right on top of its own courses, so you wake up, eat breakfast and walk to the first tee.

We are Golf Planet Holidays, and we have been arranging tailored golf trips since 1981. We book the hotel, the tee times, the transfers and every round, then hand you an itinerary that holds together rather than a list of places to sort out yourself.

Why play golf in Central England

The golf here runs from big-name resort venues to quieter clubs by the sea. The standout is The Belfry near Sutton Coldfield, a Ryder Cup host with the kind of finishing holes that make people nervous, and it is the sort of place a UK golfer wants to tick off at least once.

For something with a more old-fashioned feel, Sheringham Golf Club on the Norfolk coast plays along the cliffs with the sea in view, and the wind is part of the test rather than an inconvenience. Between those two you get a fair sense of the range on offer.

The courses you’ll play

There is a good spread of courses across the region, and several of the hotels we use have their own golf attached, so you can play without travelling far each day.

  • The Warwickshire Golf & Country Club (Kings & Earls Courses), designed by Karl Litten, par 72.
  • Forest of Arden Golf Club, designed by Donald Steel, 36 holes, par 72.
  • Belton Woods near Grantham, 36 holes across two courses.
  • Sheringham Golf Club on the Norfolk coast, a clifftop 18.
  • Stoke by Nayland, The Gainsborough Golf Course in Suffolk, par 71.

The Belfry sits at Sutton Coldfield and is the marquee name if Ryder Cup history is what you are after.

Where you’ll stay

The hotels split fairly neatly by budget and style. For a value golf-and-stay base, Belton Woods near Grantham (from £245 (≈ €275) (≈ $315) (≈ CA$455) (≈ AU$455) (≈ NZ$555) (≈ CHF 255) per person for two nights) and Forest Pines Spa & Golf Resort in Lincolnshire (from £275 (≈ €315) (≈ $355) (≈ CA$505) (≈ AU$515) (≈ NZ$625) (≈ CHF 285)) both put 36 holes or a full resort setup on the doorstep, which suits a group that wants golf morning and afternoon.

In the middle, Thorpeness Golf Club & Hotel (from £290 (≈ €325) (≈ $375) (≈ CA$535) (≈ AU$545) (≈ NZ$665) (≈ CHF 305) for three nights), The Warwickshire at Warwick (from £310 (≈ €355) (≈ $405) (≈ CA$575) (≈ AU$575) (≈ NZ$705) (≈ CHF 325)) and Dunston Hall near Norwich (from £400 (≈ €455) (≈ $525) (≈ CA$745) (≈ AU$745) (≈ NZ$915) (≈ CHF 425) for three nights) work well for golfers who also want a spa or a proper hotel to come back to.

  • Forest of Arden Hotel & Country Club near Solihull, from £395 (≈ €455) (≈ $515) (≈ CA$735) (≈ AU$735) (≈ NZ$905) (≈ CHF 415), for the Donald Steel golf and a full country-club feel.
  • The Belfry Hotel and Resort at Sutton Coldfield, from £400 (≈ €455) (≈ $525) (≈ CA$745) (≈ AU$745) (≈ NZ$915) (≈ CHF 425), for the Ryder Cup name.
  • The Red Lion at Cromer, from £440 (≈ €505) (≈ $575) (≈ CA$815) (≈ AU$825) (≈ NZ$1,005) (≈ CHF 465) for three nights, for a coastal Norfolk base rather than a resort.

Best time to play golf in Central England

May to September is the safest window for dry-ish ground and longer evenings, and that is when most golfers will want to play here. Spring and early autumn can give you firmer fairways and quieter courses, though you trade that for shorter days and a real chance of rain.

This is England, so be honest with yourself about the weather: the coastal venues in Norfolk and Suffolk can be cold and windy even in summer, and a fully waterproof bag is never wasted. Winter golf is possible but expect temporary greens and soft going.

Getting there

For most UK golfers this is a self-drive trip. The region is reachable by car from almost anywhere in England and the Midlands, and having a car makes it easy to move between Belton Woods, The Warwickshire, the Norfolk coast and Suffolk over a few days.

If you would rather not drive, or you are travelling from further afield, we can arrange transfers between the airport, the hotel and the courses. Flights are an ATOL-protected add-on we can book for you when they are needed, rather than something built into the price.

Good to know

The honest caveat is the weather and the seaside courses: venues like Sheringham and The Red Lion at Cromer are exposed to the wind off the North Sea, and a fine forecast can turn quickly, so build a little flexibility into your tee times rather than packing the schedule tight. The resort hotels here often sell golf-and-stay rates with their own courses, which is part of why the headline prices look reasonable, and we will confirm exactly which rounds and which courses are included before you book so there are no surprises on arrival.
