Stay & play — fromAbout Fulford Golf Club
Fulford Golf Club is firmly on the serious golfer's map after hosting a succession of European Tour events.
Who can forget Bernhard Langer hitting his ball from the branches of a large ash tree on the 17th during the 1981 B&H International?
This well-maintained golf course just outside York is a treat from start to finish. Measuring 6,779 yards from the back tees, Fulford is a serious test for club players. The short par 5 18th presents a great opportunity to save your card.
Our take
If you remember Langer playing from the ash tree at the 17th in 1981, this is where it happened, and Fulford still carries itself like a Tour venue.
- Serious golfersA run of European Tour events made this a club player's yardstick at 6,779 yards off the back tees. The 4th costs shots early, and the short par 5 18th rescues as many cards as it wrecks.
- Higher handicapsAbout as flat a walk as Yorkshire golf offers, barely 20 metres of climb from first tee to last, and the parkland is well kept rather than penal; a Tour course you can actually enjoy.
- SocietiesJust outside York, immaculately maintained and flat enough for every age in the group, with a finishing hole that gives even the last fourball something to chase.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 19 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually westerly, averaging 13 km/h, gusting to 41. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 7 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Major Charles MacKenzie.
The holes that will cost you. The 18th, the 4th and the 2nd. The 18th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
