Formby Ladies Golf Club, founded in 1896, is a true test of your game, whether you are a man or a woman. Set in coastal sand dunes and towering pines, it's a varied challenge. The fairways are tight, the rough heathery and the greens well protected. Formby Ladies is proof that a golf course doesn't have to be overly long to be formidable. You are guaranteed a warm welcome in the clubhouse.
- Open to all
- Currently ranked the 62nd best course in England by Golf World Magazine

Our take
Do not let the name fool you: Formby Ladies is open to all, and its tight fairways and heather have humbled plenty of long hitters.
- Serious golfersCurrently ranked 62nd in England, and length has nothing to do with it. Tight fairways, heathery rough and well protected greens demand placement all day, and it is the 3rd and the 8th that do the damage.
- Higher handicapsFlat, short and easy on the legs, so nothing about the ground will beat you. The heather might: leave the driver in the bag off most tees and you will score better than the big hitters.
- CouplesOpen to all despite the name, founded in 1896 and warmly welcoming ever since. A gentle walk through dunes and pines that pairs naturally with a Southport stay for two.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 77 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually westerly, averaging 15 km/h, gusting to 52. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 1 hazard in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. William McEwan & Douglas McEwan, with later changes by Harry Colt.
The holes that will cost you. The 3rd, the 8th and the 17th. The 3rd is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
