Tee off in the shadow of Etna, on lava-stone fairways.

Italy golf holidays

Picciolo plays across volcanic rock at 650 metres, with Etna's snow-capped cone over your shoulder. An hour down the coast, Kyle Phillips laid out the East Links at Verdura, Sicily's top-ranked course, where the sea runs alongside the closing holes. Two very different rounds, one short hop from the airport.

Italy plays golf the way it does everything else: with a sense of place. A round here is never just eighteen holes — it is Lake Como spread below the fairways at Villa d'Este, the cone of Etna brooding over Il Picciolo, the trulli and olive groves of Puglia framing San Domenico. From the lakes of the north to the islands of the south, this is a country where the course is only ever half the pleasure.

We curate Italy as a tailor-made journey — pairing the right courses with the right corners of the country, whether that means Tuscan hills around Siena, the Sardinian coast at Pevero, or the Sicilian seaboard at Verdura. We know these resorts and the people who run them, and we build each trip around how you actually want to travel.

We have arranged Italy golf since 1981. Every itinerary is hand-built and hand-priced around your dates, your group and the courses you want to play.

Why play golf in Italy

  • Scenery you play through, not past — Etna above Il Picciolo, Lake Como below Villa d'Este, the Sardinian coast at Pevero Golf Club.
  • Genuine variety — links-edged coast in Sicily and Sardinia, parkland on the northern lakes, rolling Tuscan country around La Bagnaia and Argentario.
  • Resort golf done properly — Verdura, Borgo Egnazia and San Domenico in Puglia, Is Molas on Sardinia, all built around the game and the table.
  • A country that rewards staying put or moving on — combine two or three regions, or settle into one resort and play it slowly.
  • Hand-picked, not off-the-shelf — we match courses, hotels and pace to your group rather than selling a fixed package.

The courses you’ll play

Italy's golf rewards the curious. In Sicily, the Kyle Phillips-designed Verdura Golf runs hard against the Mediterranean, while Il Picciolo Etna Golf Club climbs the volcano's lower slopes through citrus and lava. On Sardinia, Is Molas Resort Golf Club is a long-standing championship test near the southern coast.

In Tuscany, Royal Golf La Bagnaia rolls through the Sienese hills, and Argentario Golf Club commands the Maremma coast. The northern lakes hold some of Italy's most storied parkland — Circolo Villa d'Este Golf Club above Como, plus Monticello, Le Robinie near Milan and Iles Borromees above Lake Maggiore. South in Puglia, San Domenico Golf Club and Acaya Golf Club anchor the Salento; Chervò Golf San Vigilio and Poggio dei Medici complete the picture.

Where you’ll stay

Where you sleep shapes the whole trip, so we match resort to region. In Sicily, the Verdura Golf & Spa Resort is a benchmark for coastal golf and wellness, with Picciolo Etna Golf Resort & Spa (Curio Collection by Hilton) set beneath the volcano. On Sardinia, Is Molas Resort Hotel keeps you on the doorstep of its course.

In Tuscany, La Bagnaia Golf & Spa Resort near Siena and Argentario Golf Club offer a more pastoral base. Puglia is a highlight: Borgo Egnazia and the Acaya Golf Resort in the Salento pair golf with some of southern Italy's finest hospitality. On the lakes, Menaggio and Cadenabbia and the Iles Borromees clubs sit among classic resort country. We hand-pick the room and the resort to suit you.

Best time to play golf in Italy

In most of Italy, golf is a warm-weather game. The season runs roughly May to September, when long, settled days suit the northern lakes — Como, Maggiore and the parkland around Milan — and the Tuscan hills around Siena and Argentario. Winters here are cool and often wet, and many inland and northern courses go quiet.

The southern islands stretch the season further. Sicily, at Verdura and Il Picciolo, and Sardinia, at Pevero and Is Molas, hold milder, drier shoulder seasons, so spring and autumn are often the sweet spot there — comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds and the coast at its best. Puglia, in the deep south, follows a similar pattern. Tell us your dates and we'll steer you to the region that's playing well.

A sense of Italy

History & heritage

Few golfing countries carry this much history off the course. The northern lakes hold villas, formal gardens and the kind of belle-époque grandeur that drew Europe's travellers a century ago — the setting around Circolo Villa d'Este and the Borromean islands above Maggiore is a chapter of that story.

Move south and the layers deepen: Siena's medieval Palio city near La Bagnaia, the baroque towns of Sicily, the whitewashed trulli and walled cities of Puglia around San Domenico and Acaya. Italy doesn't separate golf from culture — a morning round and an afternoon in a UNESCO town belong to the same day. We build the non-golf hours in deliberately.

Food & wine

This is the country that takes the table most seriously, and the regions on your itinerary each cook their own way. Sicily is citrus, seafood, pistachio and the volcanic wines of Etna near Il Picciolo. Sardinia, around Pevero and Is Molas, leans on suckling pig, pecorino and the sea. Puglia — the land of Borgo Egnazia and San Domenico — is orecchiette, burrata, olive oil and Primitivo.

In Tuscany, near La Bagnaia and Argentario, it's the classic canon: Chianti, bistecca, pecorino and Maremma coast cooking. The northern lakes bring risotto, lake fish and Lombard refinement. We can weave in tastings, long lunches and the right tables alongside the golf.

Beyond the fairways

Italy gives every non-playing hour somewhere to go. On the lakes, it's boat trips on Como and Maggiore, the gardens of the Borromean islands and the villages around Menaggio. In Tuscany, Siena and the hill towns sit minutes from La Bagnaia, with the Maremma coast and beaches below Argentario.

Sicily offers Etna itself — walkable from Il Picciolo — plus baroque Catania and the coast at Verdura. Sardinia is all about the beaches and coves around Pevero and Is Molas. Puglia rewards slow exploration: trulli towns, baroque Lecce near Acaya, and long Adriatic beaches by Borgo Egnazia and San Domenico. Non-golfers travel just as happily here.

Getting around & exploring

Italy is a driving country, and a hire car is usually the most rewarding way to link courses, towns and the coast at your own pace. Distances between regions are real, though, so we tend to plan around one or two areas rather than crisscrossing the whole peninsula.

On the islands, a car is essential to reach the coastal resorts — Verdura and Il Picciolo on Sicily, Pevero and Is Molas on Sardinia. In the north, the lakes are well served by ferries between villages, and Milan's courses sit a short drive from the city. In Puglia, gentle distances make for easy days between Borgo Egnazia, San Domenico and Acaya. We arrange transfers and car hire as part of the itinerary.

Getting there

Italy is exceptionally well connected, with regional airports putting each golfing area within easy reach. Milan and Bergamo serve the northern lakes and the Monticello and Le Robinie courses; Florence and Pisa open up Tuscany around Siena, La Bagnaia and Argentario.

For the south, Brindisi and Bari reach Puglia and the Salento resorts; Catania serves Sicily, Verdura and Etna; Cagliari and Olbia cover Sardinia, Is Molas and Pevero. Flights are arranged as a separate, ATOL-protected add-on to your trip — we'll advise the best airport for your chosen region and book transfers to meet you on arrival.

Good to know

  • We are golf travel specialists, arranging trips since 1981 — Italy is a country we curate carefully, region by region.
  • Ground-only by design — your golf, hotels and transfers are arranged together; flights are a separate ATOL-protected add-on, never bundled in.
  • We are not an ABTA member — we hold our own trade credentials and arrange every trip directly with you.
  • Plan around one or two regions — Italy is large, and the best trips don't try to do everything at once.
  • The south plays longest — Sicily and Sardinia hold milder shoulder seasons than the lakes and the north.
  • Everything is hand-built and hand-priced around your dates, your group and the courses you want to play.
