Canary Islands golf holidays

Buenavista is a Ballesteros design pinned to the Teno coast, where two or three holes run so close to the Atlantic you watch the waves between shots. Add Hotel Jardin Tecina on La Gomera for the quiet ferry-hop few golfers ever make, and you have a fortnight of warm rounds while the home club sits under frost.

The Canary Islands sit far enough south to keep their warmth through our winter, which is exactly why golfers come here when the rest of Europe is closing for the season. On a single archipelago you can play volcanic clifftop holes on Tenerife, links-edged fairways above the Atlantic on Gran Canaria, and a course on tiny La Gomera that feels carved from the hillside. The islands reward those who want sunshine certainty without a long-haul flight, and a choice of venues that runs from polished resort hotels to quiet boutique stays.

We have arranged Canary Islands golf since 1981. Every itinerary is hand-built and hand-priced around your dates, your group and the courses you want to play.

Why play golf in Canary Islands

  • Genuine winter sun on short flying time — fairways stay warm and playable from November through March, when most of Europe is shut down.
  • Real variety across the islands — clifftop drama at Abama Golf Course, parkland and ocean views at Costa Adeje Golf Club, and the desert-edged Salobre Golf Club New and Old courses on Gran Canaria.
  • Concentration on TenerifeLas Americas, Golf del Sur, Amarilla and Buenavista are all within easy reach, so a multi-course week needs little driving.
  • Distinctive one-offsTecina Golf Course on La Gomera and Anfi Tauro in its dramatic valley setting give a trip something out of the ordinary.
  • Resort comfort — from the Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia to Las Terrazas de ABAMA, the standard of stay matches the standard of golf.

The courses you’ll play

Tenerife carries the deepest roster. Abama Golf Course drops through banana terraces toward the ocean and is among the most photographed in the islands; Costa Adeje Golf Club offers broad, generous fairways with sea views; and Las Americas Golf Course, Golf del Sur Golf Club and Amarilla Golf Course sit close together in the south for an easy rotation. Buenavista Golf Course in the north-west is a Seve Ballesteros design on a wild, exposed headland.

On Gran Canaria, Salobre Golf Club fields two contrasting courses — the New and the Old — set in volcanic terrain, while Maspalomas Golf Club, Meloneras Golf Club, Anfi Tauro Golf Course and the historic Real Las Palmas Golf Club round out the island. Fuerteventura Golf Club and La Gomera's Tecina Golf Course extend the choice across the archipelago.

Where you’ll stay

On Tenerife, the south clusters around the golf: Hotel Dreams Jardin Tropical, Iberostar Bouganville Playa and Hotel Suite Villa Maria sit in and around Costa Adeje, while Las Terrazas de ABAMA and Royal Garden Villas offer a more private, design-led stay near Guia de Isora. In the north-west, Buenavista Golf, Melia Hacienda del Conde and the 1881 Tenerife Madrigueras Golf Hotel put you beside the Buenavista links.

On Gran Canaria, the Meloneras and Maspalomas strip holds the Lopesan Costa Meloneras, Gran Hotel Lopesan Villa Del Conde, Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia and Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity. Elba Palace Golf and Vital Hotel anchors Fuerteventura, and Hotel Jardin Tecina is the natural base on La Gomera.

Best time to play golf in Canary Islands

The Canaries are a true year-round destination, and their real strength is our winter. From November through March daytime temperatures stay mild to warm and the fairways are in full play while northern Europe is frosted over — this is the islands' peak golf season and the reason most of our guests come.

Spring and autumn are reliably comfortable too, with plenty of sunshine and slightly fewer visitors. High summer (July and August) turns hot, particularly in the south of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, so early tee times are wise. There is no real off-season here; it is simply a question of how warm you want it.

A sense of Canary Islands

History & heritage

The Canaries are Spanish, but distinctly their own — closer to Africa than to the mainland, with a culture shaped by Atlantic trade and volcanic landscape. Each island keeps its own character: Gran Canaria's capital, Las Palmas, has the islands' oldest golf club in Real Las Palmas Golf Club alongside a handsome colonial old town, while Tenerife is crowned by Spain's highest peak, the Teide volcano. La Gomera, reached from Tenerife, remains green, terraced and unhurried, famous for its whistled language echoing across the ravines. Spanish is spoken throughout, English is widely understood in the resorts, and the pace is relaxed and welcoming.

Food & wine

Canarian cooking is honest and rooted in the islands: papas arrugadas — wrinkled potatoes boiled in salt — served with mojo sauces, one red and spiced, one green and herby. Fresh Atlantic fish dominates the coast, often grilled simply and eaten beside the water, while gofio, a toasted grain flour, turns up in everything from soups to desserts. The islands grow their own wine in volcanic soil; Tenerife's vineyards on the slopes below Teide produce crisp, mineral whites and characterful reds well worth ordering. In the resorts around Costa Adeje and Meloneras you will also find polished international dining, but the local guachinches and seafront tables are where the islands taste truest.

Beyond the fairways

There is real scenery to fill the non-playing days. On Tenerife, Teide National Park rises into a lunar landscape of lava and crater, and the historic town of La Orotava and colourful La Laguna reward a wander. Gran Canaria offers the vast Maspalomas dunes, dramatic mountain drives into the interior, and the old streets of Las Palmas. A short ferry from Tenerife reaches La Gomera, with its ancient laurel forests and the quiet base of Hotel Jardin Tecina. Whale and dolphin watching off the south coast, volcanic bathing pools and coastal walks all give a golf week an easy second gear.

Getting around & exploring

For a single-island trip you may not need a car at all — Tenerife's southern courses and Gran Canaria's Meloneras and Maspalomas clusters are close to their resorts, and we arrange transfers and tee-time logistics as part of the itinerary. If you want to roam between courses, a hire car is the most flexible option, particularly on Tenerife where Buenavista in the north-west sits well away from the southern clubs. La Gomera is reached by ferry from Los Cristianos on Tenerife, and Fuerteventura by a short inter-island hop. Roads are good and well signed; we will advise the right approach for your chosen courses.

Getting there

The Canaries are served by their own airports — Tenerife South and Tenerife North, Gran Canaria, and Fuerteventura — with regular flights from across the UK and Europe, typically around four hours. Flights are arranged separately as an ATOL-protected add-on, never bundled into the holiday price, so you keep full flexibility over carrier, airport and timings. We handle airport transfers and any inter-island ferries or hops as part of the ground arrangements, and we will match the right island gateway to your itinerary.

Good to know

  • Currency & language — the euro is used throughout; Spanish is the language, with English widely understood in resorts and clubs.
  • Flights are separate — we are a ground-only operator; flights are an optional ATOL-protected add-on, not included in the quoted price.
  • Multi-island trips — combining, say, Tenerife with La Gomera or Gran Canaria works well; ferries and transfers are built into your itinerary.
  • Pace yourself in summer — July and August are hot in the south, so book early tee times if you travel then.
  • Hand-built, hand-priced — we have arranged Canary Islands golf since 1981; every trip is tailored to your dates, group and chosen courses.
