Our take
Verdura gives you two Kyle Phillips eighteens and a par-3 nine on the Sicilian coast, all of it flat, open off the tee and seriously well kept.
- Serious golfersKyle Phillips of Kingsbarns designed both eighteens, and although the fairways are open there is water scattered generously around the property, so choosing the right line matters more than the width suggests.
- Higher handicapsOpen fairways, level ground and a par-3 nine to sharpen up on before the main event; the conditioning helps everything, and if you plot around the water the course is on your side.
- CouplesOne of you can loop the par-3 course while the other takes on the championship test, and with a spa attached to the resort nobody's afternoon is wasted.

Verdura Golf: your questions answered
Who designed the golf course at Verdura?
Kyle Phillips, the architect behind Kingsbarns in Scotland and The Grove in England, designed the two 18-hole courses at Verdura in Sicily. There is also a 9-hole par 3 course for honing your game. The golf here is coastal, playing to par 72, with open fairways and plenty of bunkers, and the courses are well maintained, so you can stay in one place and play something different each day.
Is Verdura worth playing?
Yes, particularly for groups who want more than one course on a single site. Phillips gave the fairways real width, so the courses encourage newer players without going soft on experienced ones, and the coastal setting adds interest. One caveat: the bunkering is generous, and a rusty sand game will get found out. That balance makes it a strong pick for mixed-ability golf trips to Sicily.
Is Verdura suitable for beginners?
Yes. The courses were designed to inspire novice players as much as to test experienced ones, and the open fairways are forgiving off the tee. The 9-hole par 3 course is the real asset for improvers: it lets anyone newer to the game warm up and sharpen the short game before tackling the two 18-hole courses. Few venues cater for both ends of a group this well.
