Western Cape golf holidays

Erinvale, at Somerset West, is Player's only course near Cape Town, and it hosted the 1996 World Cup of Golf inside twelve months of opening. Base yourself at Erinvale Estate Hotel or among the Stellenbosch vines at Spier, with Table Mountain, False Bay and fifteen courses in easy reach.

4.9 from real golfers · 15 courses · from £290pp (≈ €325) (≈ $375) (≈ CA$535) (≈ AU$545) (≈ NZ$665) (≈ CHF 305) · ATOL-protected where flights are added

Cape Town puts a championship layout, a working winelands course and a sea-cliff round within an easy drive of each other, which is rare for one base. The Western Cape is where a UK golfer can play Erinvale in the morning and be in Stellenbosch or Hermanus the same week without long internal flights.

We have planned tailored golf trips to South Africa since 1981. We book the hotel, the tee times, the transfers between courses and every round, so you arrive with a working itinerary rather than a list of phone numbers.

Why play golf in Western Cape

The standout here is Erinvale Golf Club in Somerset West, a Gary Player design and a par 72 that has hosted serious tournament golf against the backdrop of the Helderberg mountains. It is the course most UK visitors build a trip around, and it rewards a tidy long game.

Royal Cape Golf Club gives you the other side of the region's character: a flat, mature parkland par 72 close to the city, older and more traditional in feel. Between a Player-designed test and an established city club, you get genuine variety inside a short radius rather than seven versions of the same round.

The courses you’ll play

The data covers a good spread of the region's golf, from championship par 72s to bigger 27-hole clubs. Designer and hole detail below are only those confirmed for each club.

  • Erinvale Golf Club, Somerset West (Gary Player, 18 holes, par 72)
  • Somerset West Golf Club (Charles Molteno Murray, redesigned by Peter Matkovich in 2018, 18 holes, par 72)
  • Westlake Golf Club, Cape Town (Charles Molteno Murray, 18 holes, par 72)
  • Royal Cape Golf Club (18 holes, par 72)
  • Stellenbosch Golf Club (18 holes, par 72)
  • Paarl Golf Club (27 holes)
  • Hermanus Golf Club (27 holes)

Paarl and Hermanus both run to 27 holes, which gives you flexible nine-hole combinations and is useful if you are mixing golf with winelands or whale-coast days.

Where you’ll stay

For a Cape Town city base, The Vineyard Hotel (7 nights from £1,045 (≈ €1,205) (≈ $1,375) (≈ CA$1,955) (≈ AU$1,965) (≈ NZ$2,405) (≈ CHF 1,115) pp) and The Commodore Hotel (7 nights from £1,495 (≈ €1,715) (≈ $1,975) (≈ CA$2,795) (≈ AU$2,815) (≈ NZ$3,435) (≈ CHF 1,595) pp) suit golfers who want a full week with a single hotel to come back to. Thirty On Grace guesthouse (3 nights from £425 (≈ €485) (≈ $555) (≈ CA$795) (≈ AU$795) (≈ NZ$975) (≈ CHF 445) pp) and The Bay Hotel in Camps Bay (3 nights from £530 (≈ €605) (≈ $695) (≈ CA$985) (≈ AU$995) (≈ NZ$1,215) (≈ CHF 565) pp) work better for a shorter, more central stay.

  • The Vineyard Hotel, Cape Town (7 nights from £1,045 (≈ €1,205) (≈ $1,375) (≈ CA$1,955) (≈ AU$1,965) (≈ NZ$2,405) (≈ CHF 1,115) pp) and The Commodore Hotel, Cape Town (7 nights from £1,495 (≈ €1,715) (≈ $1,975) (≈ CA$2,795) (≈ AU$2,815) (≈ NZ$3,435) (≈ CHF 1,595) pp) for a full week in the city
  • The Bay Hotel, Camps Bay (3 nights from £530 (≈ €605) (≈ $695) (≈ CA$985) (≈ AU$995) (≈ NZ$1,215) (≈ CHF 565) pp) and Thirty On Grace, Cape Town (3 nights from £425 (≈ €485) (≈ $555) (≈ CA$795) (≈ AU$795) (≈ NZ$975) (≈ CHF 445) pp) for shorter city stays
  • Harbour House Hotel, Hermanus (3 nights from £290 (≈ €325) (≈ $375) (≈ CA$535) (≈ AU$545) (≈ NZ$665) (≈ CHF 305) pp) for the whale coast
  • African Oceans Manor, Mossel Bay (3 nights from £415 (≈ €475) (≈ $545) (≈ CA$775) (≈ AU$775) (≈ NZ$955) (≈ CHF 435) pp) further along the coast
  • The Farmhouse Hotel, Langebaan (3 nights from £1,210 (≈ €1,395) (≈ $1,595) (≈ CA$2,265) (≈ AU$2,275) (≈ NZ$2,785) (≈ CHF 1,285) pp) up the West Coast

Harbour House Hotel in Hermanus is the lowest entry point at £290 (≈ €325) (≈ $375) (≈ CA$535) (≈ AU$545) (≈ NZ$665) (≈ CHF 305) pp for 3 nights and pairs naturally with Hermanus Golf Club. Prices are per person and reflect the stated number of nights, so the seven-night Cape Town options are not directly comparable with the three-night coastal stays.

Best time to play golf in Western Cape

The Western Cape has a winter-rainfall climate, which is the opposite of the UK pattern. The driest, most settled golf is from roughly October to April, our autumn through to spring, when the courses are at their best and daylight is long.

UK winter, from June to August, is the Cape's wet and windy season, so it is the weaker time to come for golf even though flights can be cheaper. The southeaster wind can blow hard in midsummer too, so an early tee time is often the calmer one.

Getting there

You fly from the UK to Cape Town. There are direct overnight services from London, and a wider choice of one-stop routes through the Gulf or Europe from regional airports. Cape Town is on or close to UK time, so there is no real jet lag to play through.

Once you land, the courses and coast (Somerset West, Stellenbosch, Hermanus and beyond) are best reached by road, and we arrange your transfers as part of the trip. Flights are an ATOL-protected add-on we can book alongside the land arrangements, or you can book your own and we handle everything on the ground.

Good to know

One honest caveat: this is a spread-out region, not a single resort, so a trip that takes in Cape Town, the winelands and the coast involves a fair bit of driving between courses and hotels, and a few of the clubs are members' clubs where tee times need booking ahead. The hotel prices shown are per person for the nights stated, so weigh the three-night and seven-night options against the trip length you actually want. South Africa drives on the left, which suits UK visitors, and the Cape can swing from hot and still to windy in a single day, so pack for both.
