About Somerset West Golf Club
Somerset West Golf Club, near Stellenbosch, is less than an hour from Cape Town in South Africa. Somerset West Golf Club is one of several good golf courses in this attractive area, packed full of vineyards. The course originally opened in 1908 and has been redesigned to challenge the modern golfer without proving too testing. The well-maintained fairways are narrow but the rough is not penalising as long as you don't try anything dramatic! Watch out for the large water hazards on some of the holes but if you are on form you should return to the welcoming clubhouse with a good scorecard in your hand.

Our take
Old Cape golf done properly: Somerset West has been going since 1908, was sharpened up by Peter Matkovich in 2018, and stays narrow enough off the tee to keep you honest.
- Serious golfersNarrow fairways put the driver on probation and water is never far from the line of play; the 12th and 14th are where good cards go quiet, so take your par there and move on.
- Higher handicapsThe rough is kinder than the tight fairways suggest, so a crooked drive usually costs a shot rather than a ball, and with only around 60 metres of climb all round it is a comfortable carry-your-own course.
- CouplesUnder an hour from Cape Town with the Stellenbosch vineyards on the doorstep, it slots neatly into a winelands day where one of you plays and the other goes tasting.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 61 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually northerly, averaging 12 km/h, gusting to 39. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 8 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Charles Molteno Murray; redesigned by Peter Matkovich (2018).
The holes that will cost you. The 12th, the 14th and the 4th. The 4th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
