A five-star badge is easy to print and hard to live up to. These are the Spanish hotels where the promise holds: proper service, proper spas, and golf arranged the way it should be. Every one is a place we book, every price includes the rounds, and the notes are ours.

Finca Cortesín, Casares: the benchmark

The road climbs a mile off the coast between Marbella and Sotogrande, and Finca Cortesín arrives quietly: whitewashed courtyards, suites under four-metre ceilings, no theatre at check-in. The golf staged the 2023 Solheim Cup; its 10th is a downhill par 3 to a green shaped like a Spanish guitar, and the 13th runs between wild olives with water all down the left. Dinner is Spanish at El Jardín de Lutz under chef Lutz Bösing, the Thai Spa keeps four of its ten rooms for Thai therapists doing it properly, and the 6,000 square-metre beach club with its 35-metre infinity pool is a short shuttle away on the coast. Three nights with two rounds, bed and breakfast, £1,680 (≈ €1,955) (≈ $2,235) (≈ CA$3,145) (≈ AU$3,215) (≈ NZ$3,865) (≈ CHF 1,825) (≈ kr 21,555) (≈ kr 21,665) (≈ kr 14,625) pp. The sea is a shuttle ride rather than a doorstep, and the beach club keeps seasonal days. For the golfer who wants Spain’s most complete estate, nothing else comes close.

Marbella's golf valley: Puente Romano

Puente Romano is not a hotel block but a whitewashed village: low houses in botanical gardens of four hundred plant species running down to the sand, arranged around La Plaza, with a first-century Roman bridge standing in the grounds and a tennis club Björn Borg once managed. More than twenty restaurants inside the gates include Nobu, Cipriani, COYA and Dani García’s Leña, and the spa is run by Six Senses. The golf lies a short drive behind in the Nueva Andalucía valley: Las Brisas, Robert Trent Jones’s finest Spanish work rebuilt by Kyle Phillips in 2015, with Los Naranjos and La Quinta’s three loops alongside. Three nights with two rounds, bed and breakfast, from £460 (≈ €535) (≈ $605) (≈ CA$855) (≈ AU$875) (≈ NZ$1,055) (≈ CHF 495) (≈ kr 5,895) (≈ kr 5,925) (≈ kr 4,005) pp. There is no course on the property, and Las Brisas is a members’ club, so its tee times are the thing we arrange early. For the couple where one golfs and one wants Marbella at the door, this is the pick of the coast.

Anantara Villa Padierna Palace, Benahavís

The gates sit off the old coast road at kilometre 166, and what stands behind them is nearer a museum than a hotel: more than twelve hundred original works, a Roman amphitheatre that stages Carmen on summer nights, and a villa named for the First Lady it once hosted. The golf belongs to the estate: Alferini, a proper par 73 at 6,648 metres with its signature par 3 played over water at the 14th, and Flamingos, host to three seasons of European Senior Tour golf. The spa runs to 2,000 square metres of Roman baths and keeps a Golfer’s Massage on the menu; La Loggia’s terrace looks down the lake as far as Gibraltar. Villa Padierna starts at £460 (≈ €535) (≈ $605) (≈ CA$855) (≈ AU$875) (≈ NZ$1,055) (≈ CHF 495) (≈ kr 5,895) (≈ kr 5,925) (≈ kr 4,005) pp for three nights with two rounds, bed and breakfast, which remains the quiet bargain of Spanish five-star golf. You are inland here and evenings are hushed; Marbella’s noise is a taxi away, in both senses.

La Zambra, Mijas: the boutique option

You arrive through the golf estate itself, and the first sight is the blue towers and white face of what was the Byblos, the hotel where eighties jet-setters and royalty came to hide. La Zambra reopened it as quiet luxury: the Patio Zarzuela at its heart, a Michelin Key on the door, and the 2,000 square-metre Mood Spa. The golf could not be closer; a buggy runs you straight onto Mijas Golf’s two Robert Trent Jones courses, Los Lagos with water in play on eleven holes, Los Olivos the tighter, meaner test. Dinner is Andalusian without apology at Picador. Four nights with three rounds, bed and breakfast, from £875 (≈ €1,015) (≈ $1,165) (≈ CA$1,635) (≈ AU$1,675) (≈ NZ$2,005) (≈ CHF 945) (≈ kr 11,225) (≈ kr 11,285) (≈ kr 7,615) pp. The sea sits three and a half kilometres away and the beach club is a chiringuito reached by taxi, so this is a stay for the golf and the calm rather than the sand.

Mallorca: Castillo Son Vida and Pure Salt Port Adriano

On Mallorca the choice splits by mood. Castillo Son Vida is a castle that has stood above Palma since the thirteenth century and calls itself the Balcony of Mallorca with some justice: the bay spreads below the terrace, Ricard Anckermann’s paintings hang in the salon that bears his name, and the house is kept for guests twelve and over. Sixty-three holes of Arabella golf begin at the garden’s edge, from Son Vida, the island’s first course, where Seve won the 1990 Open de Baleares, to Son Muntaner, a European Tour venue in 2022. Seven nights with five rounds, £1,300 (≈ €1,515) (≈ $1,725) (≈ CA$2,435) (≈ AU$2,485) (≈ NZ$2,985) (≈ CHF 1,405) (≈ kr 16,675) (≈ kr 16,765) (≈ kr 11,315) pp. Pure Salt Port Adriano is the adults-only cliff house above Philippe Starck’s marina, every room facing the sea, with a free shuttle to Santa Ponsa and T Golf; from £790 (≈ €915) (≈ $1,045) (≈ CA$1,475) (≈ AU$1,515) (≈ NZ$1,815) (≈ CHF 855) (≈ kr 10,135) (≈ kr 10,185) (≈ kr 6,875) pp for three nights and two rounds. The castle for the occasion, the marina for the wind-down.

Choosing between them

The honest ladder: Villa Padierna and Puente Romano open the five-star door at £460 (≈ €535) (≈ $605) (≈ CA$855) (≈ AU$875) (≈ NZ$1,055) (≈ CHF 495) (≈ kr 5,895) (≈ kr 5,925) (≈ kr 4,005) pp; La Zambra and Port Adriano hold the middle; Son Vida and Finca Cortesín are the occasion trips. All six sit in our luxury golf stays collection, and the wider field, Greece and Turkey included, is in our guide to luxury golf holidays.
