On the stunning Isle of Islay of the Hebrides, The Machrie Hotel and Golf Links is a true golf getaway. Opened in late summer 2018 The Machrie Hotel features 47 stylish bedrooms, suites and lodges with incredible views over the golf links. There is an excellent restaurant, aptly named 18 and a spa.
The Machrie is a Scottish championship links stretching to more than 7000 yards. The original design was by Willie Campbell back in 1891. It reopened in 2018 after a lauded redesign by DJ Russell. The true links course offers four sets of tees and the generous fairways offer the opportunity to attack the green. The course is complemented by a new Wee course and comprehensive practice facilities.
Approximately 100 miles due west of Glasgow, you can reach The Machrie Hotel by ferry or by air. It's definitely worth the effort.

Our take
Getting to Islay takes some doing, and The Machrie repays the journey with 7,000 yards of revived links, a hotel worth staying in, and a wind that rarely takes a day off.
- Serious golfersPast 7,000 yards with a Hebridean wind that averages nearly twenty kilometres an hour, so flighting the ball matters more than raw length. The 12th and the 18th are the round's reckoning.
- CouplesA remote links trip that works well for both of you, 47 rooms, suites and lodges, a spa, the 18 restaurant, and the whole of Islay beyond the golf.

The wind. The wind is usually westerly, averaging 19 km/h, gusting to 76. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
