Our take
Barely 30 metres of climb between Nairn's first tee and its last green means a championship links you can walk without giving it a second thought.
- Serious golfersOld Tom Morris and Braid both had a hand in the revisions and the pedigree shows. The Moray Firth wind sets the examination, and the 13th and 18th are where good rounds slip away.
- Higher handicapsFlat underfoot, so tired legs are no excuse, but the gorse and heather eat anything crooked. Pick sensible tees, keep the driver honest and Nairn gives you a fair chance of a score.
- Buddy tripsThe natural anchor for a Highland links run, with Cabot Highlands along the road and Royal Dornoch to the north. Plenty of groups come for the bigger names and go home talking about Nairn.
Tell us who’s coming and how you like to play, and we’ll shape the right trip around you.
What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 28 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually south-westerly, averaging 14 km/h, gusting to 62. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 3 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Archie Simpson (later revised by Old Tom Morris and James Braid).
The holes that will cost you. The 13th, the 18th and the 9th. The 18th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
