About Turnberry Resort Golf Courses
Ailsa
Continuously and deservedly listed amongst the best courses of the world, Ailsa is dramatic, testing and a true links experience. It's a tough challenge and even the five par threes require your full concentration. Hit to the right part of the fairway and bump it into the greens and you’ve got a decent chance for par. Take a shortcut or risk and you could have a blow-out. This championship courses was re-designed in 2016 by renowned architect Martin Ebert and is now better than ever. Ailsa has hosted four Open Championships and with a glamorous five-star hotel on site, a play and stay holiday here does not come cheap.
- Buggies and caddies available and can be booked for you
- Electric and pull trolleys
- Five-star hotel overlooking the course
Our take
Everything you have heard about the Ailsa is broadly true; it is dramatic, it is hard, and the wind off the water runs the whole show.
- Serious golfersFind the right side of the fairway and bump it in and pars are there. Take a shortcut and a blow-out follows. The 7th and 10th are the card-wreckers, and all five par threes want your full attention.
- Higher handicapsIt will find you out if you chase it. The saving grace is the ground: flat walking, under 40 metres of climb, so the body is fine even when the scorecard is not. Play the sensible line and enjoy the day.
- Buddy tripsThis is the marquee round of a west coast trip, the one everyone books the flights for. Reworked in 2016 and listed among the best courses anywhere, it earns the fuss.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 37 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually southerly, averaging 17 km/h, gusting to 59. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 4 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Willie Fernie.
The holes that will cost you. The 7th, the 10th and the 5th. The 10th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.

Turnberry Resort Golf Courses: your questions answered
Is Turnberry worth it for a golf trip?
Yes, if a true championship links is the point of your trip. The Ailsa is continuously listed among the best courses in the world, has hosted four Open Championships, and Martin Ebert's 2016 redesign is widely held to have made it better than ever. Be honest about your game though: it is a tough, testing course, and even the five par threes demand full concentration.
Should I play the Ailsa or the King Robert the Bruce course?
The Ailsa is the one to build the trip around: it is the championship links, a par 71 that has staged four Open Championships and is continuously ranked among the best courses in the world. The King Robert the Bruce is the resort's second course and works well as an extra round. If time or budget limits you to one, make it the Ailsa.
Has Turnberry hosted The Open?
Yes, four Open Championships have been held here, on the Ailsa course. That pedigree is a big part of the draw: the Ailsa is a par 71, 18-hole links originally designed by Willie Fernie, and the 2016 redesign by Martin Ebert has made it better than ever. If playing an Open venue is on your list, this is one of the strongest reasons to come.
