Bulgaria golf holidays

Three clifftop courses at Cape Kaliakra: Thracian Cliffs, BlackSeaRama, Lighthouse.

7 hotels · 3 courses · from £350pp · ATOL Protected

Bulgaria is one of golf's genuine surprises — a stretch of the northern Black Sea coast where high white cliffs fall to the water and three modern championship courses sit within a few minutes of one another at Cape Kaliakra. This is concentrated, high-quality golf in a corner of Europe most players have never considered, paired with warm summers, easy days and a coastline that feels a world away from the busier resorts of the Mediterranean.

It is a place we send golfers who want something different: dramatic clifftop holes, uncrowded fairways and the satisfaction of having discovered somewhere ahead of the crowd. Everything is close together, so a single base puts all three courses within reach.

We know Bulgaria's golf coast inside out. Every itinerary is hand-built and hand-priced around your dates, your group and the courses you want to play.

Why play golf in Bulgaria

  • Three championship courses in one place — Thracian Cliffs, BlackSeaRama and Lighthouse all sit at Cape Kaliakra, so you can play a different course each day from a single base.
  • Clifftop drama — the Black Sea coastline gives holes set high above the water, a setting you simply do not find on the established golf circuit.
  • Uncrowded fairways — Bulgaria is still off most golfers' radar, which means space, quiet and tee times that are easy to arrange.
  • A short, walkable trio — the courses are close together, keeping transfers minimal and golf time maximal.
  • Genuine value at the premium end — modern, well-built resorts at a price that compares favourably with western Europe.

The courses you’ll play

The golf at Cape Kaliakra is the reason to come, and the three courses complement each other beautifully.

Thracian Cliffs Golf Course is the headline act — laid out along the cliffs with holes that play right at the edge of the Black Sea, it is among the most photographed courses in this part of Europe and a true test in the wind.

BlackSeaRama Golf Course runs across rolling ground above the coast, with sea views from much of the round and a layout that rewards thoughtful play over brute power.

Lighthouse Golf Course completes the set — a more parkland-and-coastal feel, generous in places and a fine course to open or close a trip.

Played together over a few days, they make one of the most distinctive golf itineraries on the continent.

Where you’ll stay

Where you stay shapes the trip, and we match the base to your group.

Thracian Cliffs Golf Resort & Spa puts you on the cliffs at Cape Kaliakra, steps from the course, with a spa and the most dramatic setting of the three.

BlackSeaRama Golf & Villas offers villa-style accommodation across the BlackSeaRama estate — well suited to groups and families who want space and self-contained comfort beside the golf.

Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort at Cape Kaliakra combines its own course with resort facilities and a spa, an easy and polished base for a golf week.

For those who prefer a city setting, the Melia Grand Hermitage Hotel in Varna places you on the coast in Bulgaria's lively seaside city, within reach of the courses for day trips.

Best time to play golf in Bulgaria

Bulgaria's Black Sea coast is a summer golf destination. The season runs roughly May to September, when the days are long, warm and dry and the courses are at their best.

June, July and August bring reliable heat and the fullest resort buzz — ideal for combining golf with the beach and the coast. May and September are our quiet favourites: the weather is still very pleasant, the courses are in excellent condition and the fairways are at their most peaceful.

Winters here are cool and often wet, so we focus your trip firmly within the warmer months. Tell us your dates and we will build around the best conditions.

A sense of Bulgaria

History & heritage

Cape Kaliakra is more than a golf address. The headland itself is a long, narrow cape steeped in legend, with a rugged nature reserve and centuries of seafaring history along this stretch of the Black Sea.

Nearby Varna, Bulgaria's third city, is the cultural heart of the coast — an ancient settlement with a relaxed, salt-air character and a long tradition as a Black Sea port. Basing part of a trip there, perhaps at the Melia Grand Hermitage, gives you a taste of Bulgarian coastal life alongside the golf: a region that has been welcoming travellers to its shores for a very long time.

Food & wine

The Black Sea coast eats well and simply. Expect fresh seafood from the water in front of you, grilled meats, garden vegetables and the famous Bulgarian salads and yoghurt-based dishes that suit a warm evening after golf.

Bulgaria is also a serious and underrated wine country, with a winemaking history that stretches back to antiquity — local reds and crisp whites are well worth exploring over dinner. At the resorts around Cape Kaliakra and in Varna you will find everything from clubhouse dining to lively coastal restaurants, and we can point you toward the tables we rate.

Beyond the fairways

There is plenty to fill the non-golf hours. The Cape Kaliakra headland and nature reserve makes a fine half-day, with cliff walks, sea views and birdlife along the reserve.

The coast itself is the other draw — beaches, swimming and the easy rhythm of a Black Sea summer. Varna rewards a day's wandering, with its seaside gardens, promenade and city buzz, and the resorts' spas at Thracian Cliffs and Lighthouse are ready when you simply want to rest. For groups and families, the villas at BlackSeaRama make a relaxed hub between rounds.

Getting around & exploring

Cape Kaliakra is compact, which is part of its appeal — Thracian Cliffs, BlackSeaRama and Lighthouse are all close together, so moving between courses and resorts takes only minutes.

We arrange private transfers throughout, from your arrival airport to your resort and on to each course, so you never need to think about logistics or hire a car unless you want one. If you are splitting time between the Cape and Varna, we handle the transfer between the two. The short distances mean more time on the course and less on the road.

Getting there

The northern Black Sea coast is served by Varna, the closest gateway to Cape Kaliakra and the most convenient arrival point for the golf.

Flights are arranged separately as an ATOL-protected add-on — we are a ground-only operator, so we tailor the on-the-ground experience and can book your flights alongside it when you would like us to. Once you land, our private transfers take over to your chosen resort. We will advise on the best routings for your departure airport and dates as part of building your itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

Golf holidays in Bulgaria — answers to the questions our golfers ask most.

It is easy to get around in Bulgaria?

We recommend arranging private transfers for your golf course visits, which we include in all Bulgaria packages. This is the most convenient option and avoids any logistical uncertainty. Taxis are widely available and very affordable by UK standards. If you prefer independence, hire cars are available at Varna and Sofia airports. Most of Bulgaria's top golf courses — Thracian Cliffs, BlackSeaRama and Cape Kaliakra — are within 20–30 minutes of each other on the Black Sea coast, making logistics simple.

Is Bulgaria good for groups?

Bulgaria offers outstanding value for golf groups and societies. Green fees at world-class courses like Thracian Cliffs are significantly lower than comparable venues in Western Europe. All-inclusive hotel options keep the group together with costs predictable and no bill-splitting. Three excellent courses in close proximity mean you can play a different course each day without long drives. The uncrowded nature of Bulgarian golf also means better availability than busier destinations. Contact us for competitive group rates and tailored society packages.

Where should I play golf in Bulgaria?

Bulgaria's best golf is concentrated on the Black Sea coast near Kavarna, where three world-class courses sit within 20 minutes of each other: Thracian Cliffs, Cape Kaliakra and BlackSeaRama. Thracian Cliffs consistently ranks among Europe's top courses — a dramatic clifftop links with Black Sea views that would look at home in Scotland. We recommend playing all three over a 5-7 night stay. Sofia also has excellent parkland golf if you prefer a city break combination.

Are flights included?

Our golf holidays are arranged ground-only — hotel, golf and transfers. You can add flights through us, and those flights are ATOL protected as part of your booking.

How do golf holidays with Golf Planet Holidays work?

Every trip is tailor-made. Tell us your group, dates and the destinations you fancy, and we build a personal itinerary — hotel, golf and transfers — around them. There are no fixed packages to squeeze into; we shape the whole break to suit how your group likes to play.

How much does a golf holiday cost?

It depends on the destination, hotel, dates and how many rounds you want, so every quote is built individually. Many breaks start in the mid-hundreds per person; winter-sun and long-haul trips cost more. Get a free, no-obligation quote and we'll confirm your figure.

Still have a question? Ask our golf travel team — a free, no-obligation quote, no call centre.
