Our take
Nine holes in the Lowlands and nine in the Highlands: Doug Carrick routed this course straight across the fault line and the setting does much of the entertaining.
- Higher handicapsThe wind sits fairly gentle here and the lochside walking asks little of the legs, flat all the way round. Water is the real question, a dozen chances to lose a ball, so club sensibly off the tee.
- CouplesStaying at Cameron House next door makes this the natural pick for a mixed trip; one of you gets Doug Carrick's design, both of you get Loch Lomond.
- Buddy tripsTreat it as the scenic round on a Scottish tour, with the hotel next door to the course. The dozen water hazards keep every match honest.

What you are actually facing
The wind. The wind is usually westerly, averaging 11 km/h, gusting to 49. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 12 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Doug Carrick.
