South Africa
Every February the same thing happens: British golf retreats to mats and temporary greens while Cape Town tees off in high summer, the Atlantic glittering below Camps Bay and daylight lasting past eight in the evening. South Africa golf holidays are the rare trip where the five-star version costs less than the ordinary one. Here is how to plan it properly.

Why the Cape is the best value in five-star golf

South Africa golf holidays start from £125 (≈ €145) (≈ $165) (≈ CA$235) (≈ AU$235) (≈ NZ$285) (≈ CHF 125) pp for three nights and two rounds, and that one number frames the whole country. Sterling buys more than R20, and has done for years, so hotels, green fees, caddies and cellar-door tastings are all priced in a currency that works hard for British travellers. A five-star beachfront stay with golf often costs about what a mid-range Algarve week does, and the difference shows up everywhere from the wine list to the halfway house. The maths holds.

That is why the Cape has become the value play in five-star golf: Atlantic light, mountain courses, proper service, and a bar bill that makes you check the receipt twice in a good way. The cheapest way in is on the east coast. See the £125 (≈ €145) (≈ $165) (≈ CA$235) (≈ AU$235) (≈ NZ$285) (≈ CHF 125) dates at The Benjamin Hotel, Durban, then keep reading for the Cape itself.

When to go: November to March, and why February wins

The Cape season runs November to March, which is high summer there and the dead of winter here. While British fairways sit under frost sheets and temporary greens, Stellenbosch is dry, warm and playing firm. February is the pick: the December crowds have gone home, the southeaster the locals call the Cape Doctor has usually settled, and the evenings stay light until after eight. It rarely rains.

One honest caveat. The flight from London is overnight and around eleven and a half hours, and flights are quoted separately, with ATOL protection where flights are included. The compensation is the clock: Cape Town sits just two hours ahead of the UK, so you land at breakfast without jet lag and can play that afternoon. If whales appeal more than high summer, Hermanus runs to a different calendar. See the £290 (≈ €335) (≈ $375) (≈ CA$545) (≈ AU$555) (≈ NZ$675) (≈ CHF 305) dates at Harbour House Hotel, Hermanus and read the seasonal note further down.

Where our specialists would stay in South Africa

Where to base a Cape Town golf holiday

For Cape Town golf holidays the base decides the trip. Camps Bay is the postcard option. See the £530 (≈ €615) (≈ $695) (≈ CA$995) (≈ AU$1,015) (≈ NZ$1,235) (≈ CHF 565) dates at The Bay Hotel, Camps Bay Cape Town, across the road from the sand with the Twelve Apostles behind it and around twenty minutes from the city courses. Those courses earn the trip on their own. Royal Cape, founded in 1885, is the oldest club in South Africa; Steenberg plays through a working wine estate in Constantia; Metropolitan sits between Signal Hill and the Atlantic on the Green Point side of town.

If you would rather spend on green fees than the room, see the £425 (≈ €485) (≈ $555) (≈ CA$795) (≈ AU$815) (≈ NZ$985) (≈ CHF 455) dates at Thirty On Grace, Guesthouse, Cape Town, a quiet city guesthouse with three nights and two rounds. The Winelands are the other base, forty minutes inland: Erinvale at the foot of the Helderberg, Stellenbosch under its old oaks, Devonvale among the vines, and a glass of Chenin Blanc waiting after the round. Both bases work. Many of our guests split the trip and do the two together.

Winelands golf, hosted: the Western Cape Spring Tour 2027

The simplest way to play Winelands golf is to let us host it. The Western Cape Spring Tour runs 28 February to 9 March 2027, hosted in person by Sue from the GPH team and capped at 12 guests. Six rounds are pre-booked: Erinvale, Ernie Els’s home club, then Stellenbosch, Devonvale, Metropolitan, Steenberg and Royal Cape. You stay four nights at Silver Forest in Somerset West and five at The Vineyard in Cape Town. Sue hosts it.

The price is £2,995 (≈ €3,475) (≈ $3,965) (≈ CA$5,635) (≈ AU$5,745) (≈ NZ$6,995) (≈ CHF 3,205) pp sharing and includes welcome and farewell dinners, Winelands tastings, all transfers, and ATOL and PTS protection, with flights quoted separately. Solo travellers have their own room at a single-occupancy rate confirmed up front. Day 10 is departure, or you extend: a safari extension can be added, and our guide to golf and safari holidays in South Africa shows how that works. The full itinerary is on the Western Cape Spring Tour page.

Hermanus, the Garden Route and Durban: the full price ladder

The Cape takes the headlines, and the rest of the coast keeps the prices honest. From Durban’s warm winters to a Big Five reserve above Mossel Bay, the same rand arithmetic applies all the way up the ladder. Here it is, cheapest first, every figure a real bookable package price per person sharing.

Venue From (pp) Nights and rounds Why
The Benjamin Hotel, Durban £125 (≈ €145) (≈ $165) (≈ CA$235) (≈ AU$235) (≈ NZ$285) (≈ CHF 125) 3 nights, 2 rounds Durban warmth on the smallest budget
Cape St. Francis Resort £175 (≈ €195) (≈ $225) (≈ CA$325) (≈ AU$335) (≈ NZ$405) (≈ CHF 185) 3 nights, 2 rounds Quiet Eastern Cape surf-town golf
Harbour House Hotel, Hermanus £290 (≈ €335) (≈ $375) (≈ CA$545) (≈ AU$555) (≈ NZ$675) (≈ CHF 305) 3 nights, 2 rounds On the old harbour, whales June to November
Beverly Hills, Umhlanga £350 (≈ €405) (≈ $455) (≈ CA$655) (≈ AU$665) (≈ NZ$815) (≈ CHF 365) 3 nights, 2 rounds Five-star beachfront just north of Durban
African Oceans Manor, Mossel Bay £415 (≈ €475) (≈ $545) (≈ CA$775) (≈ AU$795) (≈ NZ$965) (≈ CHF 435) 3 nights, 2 rounds Five-star gateway to the Garden Route
Thirty On Grace, Cape Town £425 (≈ €485) (≈ $555) (≈ CA$795) (≈ AU$815) (≈ NZ$985) (≈ CHF 455) 3 nights, 2 rounds Guesthouse base for the city courses
The Bay Hotel, Camps Bay £530 (≈ €615) (≈ $695) (≈ CA$995) (≈ AU$1,015) (≈ NZ$1,235) (≈ CHF 565) Tailor-made Camps Bay beachfront, five stars
Gondwana Game Reserve £875 (≈ €1,015) (≈ $1,155) (≈ CA$1,645) (≈ AU$1,675) (≈ NZ$2,035) (≈ CHF 935) Tailor-made Big Five safari paired with Garden Route golf

Two notes on that list. The southern right whales arrive off Hermanus between June and November, which is the Cape winter, so pack for the odd wet morning if you travel for the whales rather than the golf. Gondwana is different. It is a Big Five reserve inland from Mossel Bay where game drives share the bill with Garden Route golf; see the £875 (≈ €1,015) (≈ $1,155) (≈ CA$1,645) (≈ AU$1,675) (≈ NZ$2,035) (≈ CHF 935) dates at Gondwana Game Reserve if the safari is the point.

What it costs and how the planning works

Three anchors to plan around. A long weekend of Durban golf from £125 (≈ €145) (≈ $165) (≈ CA$235) (≈ AU$235) (≈ NZ$285) (≈ CHF 125) pp. Cape Town with three nights and two rounds from £425 (≈ €485) (≈ $555) (≈ CA$795) (≈ AU$815) (≈ NZ$985) (≈ CHF 455) pp at a guesthouse, or from £530 (≈ €615) (≈ $695) (≈ CA$995) (≈ AU$1,015) (≈ NZ$1,235) (≈ CHF 565) pp on the Camps Bay beachfront. And the hosted Winelands tour at £2,995 (≈ €3,475) (≈ $3,965) (≈ CA$5,635) (≈ AU$5,745) (≈ NZ$6,995) (≈ CHF 3,205) pp sharing, with six rounds, two hotels and Sue on hand throughout. Everything between those points is tailor-made: one named specialist builds the trip, replies personally, and stays your contact from first quote to final transfer.

That part matters. We have been arranging golf travel since 1981 and hold 4.9 from 98 Google reviews, and South Africa rewards planning more than most destinations because the distances are real. If you are travelling on your own, our guide to solo golf holidays in South Africa covers how the hosted tour and single-occupancy rates work. Tell us your February, and we will price it in plain pounds.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for a golf holiday in Cape Town?

November to March, the Cape high summer. February is the pick: settled weather, light evenings and firm fairways while most UK courses sit on temporary greens. Hermanus is the exception, with southern right whales offshore from June to November, which is the Cape winter.

How much does a South Africa golf holiday cost?

Real package prices start at £125 (≈ €145) (≈ $165) (≈ CA$235) (≈ AU$235) (≈ NZ$285) (≈ CHF 125) pp for three nights and two rounds in Durban. Cape Town runs from £425 (≈ €485) (≈ $555) (≈ CA$795) (≈ AU$815) (≈ NZ$985) (≈ CHF 455) pp at a city guesthouse to £530 (≈ €615) (≈ $695) (≈ CA$995) (≈ AU$1,015) (≈ NZ$1,235) (≈ CHF 565) pp at The Bay Hotel in Camps Bay, and the fully hosted Western Cape Spring Tour is £2,995 (≈ €3,475) (≈ $3,965) (≈ CA$5,635) (≈ AU$5,745) (≈ NZ$6,995) (≈ CHF 3,205) pp sharing with six pre-booked rounds.

Are flights included in South Africa golf packages?

No. Our packages are ground-only and flights are quoted separately, with ATOL protection where flights are included. The London flight is overnight, around eleven and a half hours, and Cape Town is only two hours ahead of the UK, so there is no jet lag to recover from.

Can I combine golf and safari in South Africa?

Yes. Gondwana Game Reserve, a Big Five reserve inland from Mossel Bay, has packages from £875 (≈ €1,015) (≈ $1,155) (≈ CA$1,645) (≈ AU$1,675) (≈ NZ$2,035) (≈ CHF 935) pp, and the hosted Western Cape Spring Tour offers a safari extension after day 10. Our golf and safari holidays guide covers the routes in detail.

Is South Africa good for solo golfers?

Very. The hosted Western Cape Spring Tour is capped at 12 guests with Sue from the GPH team hosting in person, and solo travellers have their own room at a single-occupancy rate confirmed up front. Our solo golf holidays in South Africa guide has the full picture.
