Montgomerie Golf Club Dubai is in the heart of the prestigious Emirates Hills. A design collaboration between golfing great Colin Montgomerie and Desmond Muirhead this is a links style oasis. The lush green fairways are sprinkled with 81 bunkers and 14 lakes, covering 49 acres. As with all The Montgomerie golf courses, it's a worthy challenge.

Our take
Eighty-one bunkers and fourteen lakes tell you what Colin Montgomerie and Desmond Muirhead had in mind: keep it in position and keep it dry.
- Serious golfersBoth nines save their teeth for the finish; cards tend to die at the 9th and the 18th. With 14 lakes and 81 bunkers covering 49 acres between them, the driver is a decision here, not a default.
- Higher handicapsA GPS buggy comes with the green fee, which takes the guesswork out of all that water, and free range balls mean you can find a swing before the bunkers start asking.
- Buddy tripsWell placed for a Dubai itinerary, with Jumeirah Golf Estates nearby and The Palm close at hand. Flat, lush and just penal enough around the greens to keep a group honest.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 38 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually north-westerly, averaging 12 km/h, gusting to 36. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. Water is very much in play across this course. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Colin Montgomerie and Desmond Muirhead.
The holes that will cost you. The 18th, the 9th and the 5th. The 18th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
