Open Championship winner Ernie Els has put his unique stamp on The Els Club, Dubai. Els has put his passion for the great links of the UK to work here, recreating some of these design features in a desert landscape. With a maximum length of 7,538 yards the course is visually and strategically interesting. Extensive use of sandy waste areas and of native vegetation between wide immaculate fairways, along with a classic style of bunkering, add to the links effect.

Our take
Off the very back tees this Ernie Els design runs to 7,538 yards, though a much friendlier course hides inside it if you choose your markers sensibly.
- Serious golfersEls borrowed from the great British links: sandy waste, running ground and classic bunkering, with enough breeze most days to matter. The 8th and the 18th are the card wreckers.
- Higher handicapsThe fairways are wide and immaculate and the walking is easy, but the native scrub and waste areas swallow anything loose. Drop down a tee and it becomes a round to enjoy.
- Buddy tripsA desert links suits a group who like the ball on the ground; matches have a habit of going to the 18th, which is exactly where this course bares its teeth.
