South West Spain golf holidays

Montecastillo at Jerez held the European Tour's Volvo Masters for five straight years, and it sits an easy drive from the pine-lined fairways of El Rompido and the sherry bodegas of Sanlucar. Quieter than the Costa del Sol, and the green fees show it.

South West Spain is the quieter, more characterful corner of Spanish golf — the Atlantic-facing provinces of Cadiz and Huelva, where sherry towns, pine forests and wide ocean beaches replace the crowds of the Costa del Sol. This is Jerez, Chiclana, Sanlucar de Barrameda, Cartaya and Rota: courses set among umbrella pines and tidal marshland, resorts built for golf, and an unhurried Andalusian rhythm that rewards a longer stay.

It suits golfers who want serious courses without the bustle — a Stay and Play at El Rompido near Cartaya, a few days at Montecastillo outside Jerez, or a base on the Costa Ballena coast at Rota, with sherry bodegas and fresh Atlantic seafood between rounds.

We have arranged South West Spain golf since 1981. Every itinerary is hand-built and hand-priced around your dates, your group and the courses you want to play.

Why play golf in South West Spain

  • A genuine spread of courses across two Atlantic provinces — Jerez, Cartaya, Chiclana, Sanlucar, Cadiz and Rota — so you can build variety into a single trip
  • Resort golf done properly: Precise Resort El Rompido and Montecastillo Resort Hotel sit on their own courses for true Stay and Play convenience
  • Quieter fairways than the Costa del Sol, with pine-lined and links-influenced layouts that reward placement over power
  • A strong cluster around Jerez and Chiclana — Sherry Golf, Villa Nueva, La Estancia and Real Novo Sancti Petri all within easy reach of one base
  • Andalusia beyond the golf: sherry country, flamenco, the horses of Jerez and long Atlantic beaches
  • We hand-pick the courses, hotels and order of play to match how your group likes to travel

The courses you’ll play

The region's anchor courses give you real range. El Rompido Golf at Cartaya runs through umbrella pines and salt marsh on the Huelva coast, a resort layout that pairs naturally with a stay at Precise Resort El Rompido. Montecastillo Golf Course at Jerez is the area's championship test, a sweeping course on rolling ground beside the Montecastillo Resort Hotel. On the coast at Rota, Costa Ballena Ocean Club de Golf offers wide, breezy holes with the Atlantic close at hand.

Around Jerez and Chiclana you can add Sherry Golf, Villa Nueva at Cadiz, La Estancia at Chiclana de la Frontera, Real Novo Sancti Petri and Sanlucar Club de Campo at Sanlucar de Barrameda — enough to fill a week without repeating a round.

Where you’ll stay

We base most trips on golf-resort hotels that put you on or beside the course. Precise Resort El Rompido at Cartaya is the natural choice for golf among the pines and marshes of the Huelva coast. Montecastillo Resort Hotel at Jerez sits beside its own championship course and works well as a base for the Jerez and Chiclana cluster. On the Costa Ballena coast, Barcelo Costa Ballena Golf & Spa at Rota combines golf, spa and a beach setting.

Which base suits you depends on your group and how much you want to move around. We'll match the hotel — and whether you stay put or split your nights — to your itinerary.

Best time to play golf in South West Spain

Spring and autumn are the sweet spot in South West Spain. March to May brings warm, settled days and green Andalusian countryside, while September and October offer reliable sunshine after the summer heat has eased — both ideal for golf across Jerez, Cartaya and the Costa Ballena coast.

Summer is warm to hot inland around Jerez and Chiclana, though the Atlantic breeze at Rota and Cartaya takes the edge off; early tee times are wise. Winters here are mild but cooler and noticeably quieter — pleasant for a low-key, good-value golf break, but this is not a guaranteed winter-sun destination in the way the Canaries or Morocco are. For the best balance of weather, course condition and atmosphere, aim for spring or autumn.

A sense of South West Spain

History & heritage

This is the heartland of Andalusian tradition. Jerez de la Frontera is the home of sherry and of Spain's celebrated dancing horses, with bodegas and the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art to explore. Flamenco runs deep here — Jerez is one of its founding cradles — and the white towns of the interior carry centuries of Moorish and Christian history in their streets and churches.

On the coast, Sanlucar de Barrameda guards the mouth of the Guadalquivir, Cadiz claims to be one of Europe's oldest cities, and Rota and Chiclana add their own seafaring character. A round here sits naturally alongside a city's worth of culture.

Food & wine

Sherry defines the region's table. The dry fino and manzanilla of Jerez and Sanlucar de Barrameda are made for the local kitchen — chilled, crisp and perfect with seafood. Cadiz province is famous for its Atlantic catch: fried fish, prawns, sea bass and the celebrated bluefin tuna of the coast, often simply grilled.

Inland around Jerez and Chiclana you'll find hearty Andalusian cooking, slow-cooked meats and the tapas culture done with real conviction. A long lunch after golf, a bodega visit in Jerez, or fresh seafood by the water at Sanlucar are all part of the appeal — and easy to weave into your days between rounds.

Beyond the fairways

There's plenty to fill the non-golf hours. Tour the sherry bodegas of Jerez or Sanlucar de Barrameda, watch the famous Andalusian horses, or catch flamenco in the town where it was born. The Atlantic coast delivers wide, clean beaches at Rota, Costa Ballena and Chiclana, plus the historic seafront of Cadiz nearby.

For a day out, the white towns of inland Cadiz province reward a drive, and the wetlands around the Guadalquivir estuary near Sanlucar are rich in birdlife. Whether your group wants culture, coast or simply a long lunch, we can build the rest days around the golf.

Getting around & exploring

A hire car is the most practical way to get the best from South West Spain — the courses are spread across Cadiz and Huelva provinces, from Cartaya in the west to Chiclana and Jerez, and a car lets you mix bases and reach bodegas, beaches and white towns at your own pace.

If you'd rather not drive, a resort-focused trip works well: stay at Precise Resort El Rompido, Montecastillo or Barcelo Costa Ballena and play the on-site and nearest courses, with private transfers arranged for any further outings. We'll advise on the right approach for your group and handle the transfers either way.

Getting there

The region is well served by air, with the main gateways being the airports serving Jerez and the wider Cadiz and Huelva area, plus larger hubs within driving distance. Flights are arranged as a separate, ATOL-protected add-on to your trip — they are never bundled into the holiday — so you're free to fly from your preferred airport on the routing that suits you.

Tell us where you'd like to fly from and we'll advise on the best combination of airport, transfer and base. We can book your flights for you with ATOL protection, or you can arrange your own and we'll handle the ground arrangements from arrival.
