Our take
If serious practice matters to you, Costa Ballena has what Sweden's PGA call the best facilities in Europe, plus twenty-seven Olazabal holes to test the results on.
- Serious golfersTwenty-seven holes, Bermuda greens that putt the same every day, and a practice set-up good enough to build a whole trip around. The 5th and the 10th are the two that decide most cards.
- Higher handicapsBarely fifteen metres of climb all round, so it is about as easy a walk as golf offers, and the nine hole par three course is a gentle way to find your swing before the main event.
- SocietiesThree loops of nine keep a big party moving, the bunkers and lakes are placed to test rather than torment, and the holes running along the coastline give everyone something to talk about at dinner.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 15 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually westerly, averaging 12 km/h, gusting to 42. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 9 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Jose Maria Olazabal.
The holes that will cost you. The 5th, the 10th and the 12th. The 5th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
