It is one of the most common questions we are asked: for winter sun and a great golf trip, do you point the clubs towards the Canary Islands or the Costa del Sol? Both are Spanish, both are warm, both are wonderful — and yet they offer quite different holidays. One is a tight, storied golf coast humming with energy; the other is a scatter of volcanic islands where the pace slows and the ocean is never far from the fairway.
We send golfers to both every year, and we have no reason to flatter one over the other. So here is an honest comparison — the courses, the climate, the atmosphere and the kind of trip each does best — to help you choose the one that fits your group, before we tailor it precisely to you.
The golf itself: density versus drama
The Costa del Sol did not earn the nickname ‘Costa del Golf’ by accident. In a relatively short stretch between Sotogrande and Marbella sits one of the densest concentrations of quality golf in Europe, which means several contrasting courses can be reached within a short drive of a single hotel. Base yourself at Fairmont La Hacienda, SO/ Sotogrande Spa & Golf Resort or the polished La Quinta Golf & Country Club and you can play a different layout each morning without ever repacking. For a group that wants to maximise rounds and variety in one week, this density is the Costa’s great trump card.
The Canary Islands play a different game. Here the golf is more dispersed across the archipelago, but what it lacks in concentration it repays in sheer theatre — courses carved into volcanic terrain, tumbling towards the Atlantic, with light and scenery you simply do not get on the mainland. Resorts such as Lopesan Costa Meloneras on Gran Canaria, the Sheraton Fuerteventura Beach, Golf & Spa Resort and the cliff-top Hotel Jardin Tecina on La Gomera put memorable, ocean-edged golf on your doorstep. You may play fewer different courses in a week, but you will remember every hole.
Season and weather: the Canaries’ quiet advantage
If your trip is pencilled in for the heart of winter, the Canary Islands hold a genuine edge. Lying far to the south off the African coast, they enjoy famously mild, stable temperatures when the UK is at its bleakest, which makes December through March their strongest season rather than a compromise. A January round at Melia Hacienda del Conde on Tenerife or the Elba Palace Golf & Vital Hotel on Fuerteventura feels like stolen summer.
The Costa del Sol is a beautiful golf destination for the larger part of the year and a popular winter bolt-hole too, but it sits further north and can turn cooler in January and February, with the occasional wet day. Where it truly shines is spring and autumn, when the courses around Marbella and Estepona — reached from hotels such as Hotel Exe Estepona Thalasso & Spa or Hotel Lima — are in glorious condition and the evenings are warm. In short: for dependable midwinter sun, lean Canaries; for a vibrant shoulder-season trip, lean Costa.
Where our specialists would stay in Canary Islands
Atmosphere: cosmopolitan buzz or island calm
Evenings tell the two destinations apart as clearly as the golf. The Costa del Sol is cosmopolitan and sociable — the marina glamour of Puerto Banus, the restaurants of Marbella, the late dinners and the people-watching. Stay at Barcelo Occidental Banus, Hard Rock Hotel Marbella or Amare Beach Hotel and the nightlife is part of the appeal. It suits golf societies and groups who want their days on the course matched by lively evenings off it.
The Canary Islands offer something more restful. The mood is unhurried and resort-led, built around sun, sea and space rather than a buzzing scene. At Hotel Dreams Jardin Tropical or Iberostar Bouganville Playa in Costa Adeje, or the serene Hotel Suite Villa Maria, the rhythm is gentler — golf in the morning, the beach or the pool after, an easy dinner and an early night before the next round. For couples, families and golfers who want to decompress, that calm is precisely the point.
So which should you choose?
If you are a buggy society, a keen low handicapper hunting celebrated layouts, or a group that wants maximum golf and lively nights, the Costa del Sol is your coast — a dense, glamorous golf playground with a hotel for every taste, from the Hotel Encinar de Sotogrande to the Barcelo Occidental Fuengirola. If you want guaranteed winter warmth, dramatic ocean scenery and a slower, sun-soaked pace — especially if non-golfing partners or children are along — the Canary Islands answer beautifully, whether on Tenerife at the 1881 Tenerife Madrigueras Golf Hotel, on Gran Canaria at Kumara Serenoa in Maspalomas, or further afield on La Gomera.
The honest truth is that many of our clients alternate between the two, year on year, because each offers something the other cannot. We plan tailor-made trips to both — the right hotels, the right tee times and the right courses for your group — so you needn’t take our word for which is best. Tell us who is travelling and what you want from the week, and we will build it.
