South Brittany golf holidays

Play La Bretesche off the back of an island château, with the Brière forest on every fairway, then drive twenty minutes to La Baule's white-sand bay and the Hermitage on the front. Rhuys-Kerver and Cornouaille fill the days between, and the LeShuttle crossing is part of the price.

South Brittany puts golf on the Atlantic coast at La Baule, a resort town built around a long sweep of sandy bay, with the Domaine de la Bretesche estate sitting inland near Missillac. For a UK golfer it is a softer, greener corner of France than the south, with sea air, pine and a slower pace than the busier Mediterranean resorts.

We are Golf Planet Holidays, and we have been arranging tailored golf trips since 1981. We plan the hotel, the tee times, the transfers and every round for you, so you arrive with the golf already booked and nothing left to sort out on the day.

Why play golf in South Brittany

The golf here is tied to the resorts rather than to one famous links, and the standout is the Domaine de la Bretesche near Missillac. It is a golf and spa estate built around a moated chateau and lake, the kind of place where the setting does a lot of the work and you can play, eat and stay without moving the car.

La Baule is the other base, a coastal resort with golf within easy reach of the seafront hotels. If you want golf paired with a proper beach town and good food, this is the part of Brittany to pick.

The courses you’ll play

The golf in South Brittany comes through the resorts themselves rather than a long list of standalone clubs. The clearest example in our collection is the course attached to the Domaine de la Bretesche Golf & Spa at Missillac, where the golf, the spa and the chateau hotel all sit on one estate around the lake.

From the La Baule hotels, the golf is a short drive along the coast. We confirm the exact courses and tee times for your dates when we build the trip, so you know what you are playing before you travel rather than working it out on arrival.

Where you’ll stay

South Brittany splits between the golf estate inland and the coastal hotels at La Baule, so the choice is mostly about whether you want golf on the doorstep or the beach.

  • Domaine de la Bretesche Golf & Spa, Missillac (from £535 (≈ €615) (≈ $705) (≈ CA$995) (≈ AU$1,005) (≈ NZ$1,225) (≈ CHF 565) pp) is the golf-and-spa base, set around the chateau and lake, and the natural pick if you want to stay where you play.
  • Relais et Chateaux Castel Marie Louise, La Baule (from £530 (≈ €605) (≈ $695) (≈ CA$985) (≈ AU$995) (≈ NZ$1,215) (≈ CHF 555) pp) is the more characterful coastal stay, a Relais et Chateaux property in the resort.
  • Hotel Barriere Le Royal, La Baule (from £650 (≈ €745) (≈ $855) (≈ CA$1,205) (≈ AU$1,225) (≈ NZ$1,485) (≈ CHF 685) pp) and Hotel Barriere l'Hermitage, La Baule (from £725 (≈ €835) (≈ $955) (≈ CA$1,345) (≈ AU$1,365) (≈ NZ$1,655) (≈ CHF 765) pp, four nights) are the larger seafront hotels for a comfortable beach-and-golf week.

If golf is the priority, La Bretesche is the standout. If you want the beach town and the bigger hotels, the La Baule options suit better.

Best time to play golf in South Brittany

Late spring through early autumn is the sensible window, with May, June and September often the best balance of mild weather and quieter courses. The Atlantic coast of Brittany is green for a reason, so be ready for the odd wet or breezy day even in summer.

July and August bring the warmest weather but also the French and UK school holidays, so the resort and the beaches are at their busiest then.

Getting there

Most UK golfers fly to Nantes, which is the nearest major airport for La Baule and Missillac, and we arrange transfers from there to your hotel. Flights are an ATOL-protected add-on we can book for you where you want them included; otherwise you are free to book your own.

South Brittany is also within reach of a self-drive trip via the Channel ports if you would rather bring the car and have it for the week. It is a longer drive than the northern French regions, so it suits those who genuinely want their own car rather than those just looking to save on a short hop.

Good to know

The honest caveat for South Brittany is that this is a small, resort-led collection rather than a region with a dense spread of championship clubs, so it works best if you want golf built around a comfortable coastal or estate stay rather than a high-volume golf-every-day itinerary. The weather is Atlantic, so pack waterproofs whatever the month, and we will confirm the exact courses and tee times for your dates as part of planning the trip.

Frequently asked questions

Golf holidays in South Brittany — answers to the questions our golfers ask most.

How long is LeShuttle crossing time to France

The Eurotunnel LeShuttle from Folkestone to Calais takes about 35 minutes, which makes a self-drive trip genuinely easy for the Northern France golf resorts. Le Touquet, Hardelot and the courses around the Somme are roughly two to three hours on from Calais, so you can load the clubs, drive on and be on the first tee the same day, and on those breaks we can include the crossing in the price. For the south and southwest, such as Biarritz, the Riviera and Provence, most golfers fly into Nice, Marseille, Biarritz or Bordeaux and we arrange transfers on the ground.

How much does a golf holiday in France cost?

Golf holidays in France start from £235 (≈ €265) (≈ $305) (≈ CA$435) (≈ AU$435) (≈ NZ$535) (≈ CHF 245) pp with Golf Planet Holidays. That is a tailor-made ground package, and the final price depends on your hotel, the courses you play and the season.

When is the best time to play golf in France?

May, June, September and October are the best months, with comfortable temperatures and courses in peak condition. The south of France stays playable into late autumn.

Where should I play golf in France?

There are more than 700 golf courses in France. As first steps we would recommend Northern France. There are ten great courses here.  Chat with us about the various choices if you wish to venture further afield.

How many golf courses are there in France?

We feature 130 courses and 102 resorts across France including Saint Malo Golf Club and Sept Tours Golf Club. Your specialist matches the courses to your group's standard and budget.

Is it easy to get around in France?

Getting around France is straightforward. Self-driving is the most popular option — if you've come via Le Shuttle, you already have your car. Trains are excellent for city-to-city travel, particularly from Paris to Bordeaux (2 hours on the TGV). Within golf regions like the Algarve or Brittany, a hire car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. We include all airport or station transfers in our packages and can arrange inter-course transfers, so you're never left without options.
