About Golf International Barrière La Baule
Golf International La Baule in Brittany is a previous host to the French Open. The original 18 was designed by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas in the late 1970s. Fifteen years later Michel Gayon split the 18 in two and added nine holes to each to create the Red and the Blue courses.
This 36 hole layout just outside La Baule in south Brittany is a treat. Both courses are parkland in style and about 7000 yards off the tiger tees, but the Blue course is easier off the tee and easier to understand the principles to play it well.
The Red course is narrower and has more water but there are plenty of opportunities to score well. The clubhouse, with its pool and restaurant, is a fitting accompaniment to the five-star resort hotels of Hermitage, Royal and Castel Marie Louise in La Baule itself. Our take
Forty five holes, a French Open past and water seemingly on every other hole: La Baule is south Brittany golf at full scale.
- Serious golfersBoth courses stretch to about 7,000 yards off the tiger tees and the French Open has been decided here, so the pedigree is real. Water is everywhere across the property, and the 10th and the 12th do the most damage.
- Higher handicapsStart on the Blue, the easier of the pair, because there is water here in quantities that will empty a bag if you take on every carry. The walking is mercifully flat throughout.
- SocietiesForty five holes means the whole group tees off without a squeeze, with the Red for the stronger players and the Blue for the rest. A former French Open venue settles the argument about where to base the trip.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 74 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually westerly, averaging 14 km/h, gusting to 47. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. Water is very much in play across this course. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
