Brittany golf holidays

Dinard sits on broom and gorse above the Emerald Coast, laid out by a Scot in the 1880s and barely changed since; an hour south, Le Tronchet runs through granite and forest from the hand that drew Le Golf National. Your car comes too, the Channel crossing folded into the price, so the clubs stay in the boot from your drive to the first tee.

Brittany is France with the volume turned down: a granite coastline of tidal estuaries and walled ports, oyster beds and pine-backed dunes, where the golf has a quiet, century-old confidence. This is the corner of France where the British first brought the game across the Channel, and it shows — clifftop links at Dinard Golf Club, château fairways at La Bretesche, and the breezy, salt-air courses that ring Saint-Malo and the southern Morbihan coast. It is an easy, unhurried place to play, pairing serious golf with seafood, cider and the kind of scenery that rewards taking the long way round.

We have arranged Brittany golf since 1981. Every itinerary is hand-built and hand-priced around your dates, your group and the courses you want to play.

Why play golf in Brittany

  • One of the cradles of European golf — Dinard Golf Club dates to the 19th century and remains a true seaside test on the Côte d'Émeraude.
  • Genuine variety in a compact region: clifftop and coastal play around Saint-Malo and Dinard, parkland and château golf inland at La Bretesche and Les Ormes.
  • Resort-and-course pairings we know well — Domaine de la Bretesche and Domaine des Ormes put hotel, spa and fairways on one estate.
  • A southern arc of well-regarded courses around the Morbihan and the Loire mouth, from Rhuys-Kerver to Golf International Barrière La Baule.
  • Short, sociable rounds between long lunches — the Breton way to play.

The courses you’ll play

The headline is Dinard Golf Club, an old-school seaside course laid out above the rocks of the Côte d'Émeraude, where wind and tide shape every shot. Across the estuary, Saint-Malo Golf Club offers a more expansive, water-fringed layout that suits a relaxed first or last round.

Inland, La Bretesche Golf Club is the romantic one — fairways wrapped around a moated medieval château near Missillac, all mature trees and reflected stone. Les Ormes Golf Club and La Freslonnière Golf Club near Rennes give you classic Breton parkland, while Nantes La Vigneux Golf Club anchors the southern, Loire-side end of a trip.

Further south, Rhuys-Kerver Golf Club on the Morbihan and Golf International Barrière La Baule add coastal flavour to a touring itinerary.

Where you’ll stay

We hand-pick the stay around the courses you most want to play. On the Côte d'Émeraude, Hôtel Barrière Le Grand Hôtel, Dinard is the grande dame choice, steps from the sea and the old links town. Inland and quieter, Golf Hotel Saint Malo at Le Tronchet sits beside its own fairways for easy, walk-out golf.

For estate stays where everything is on one domaine, Domaine de la Bretesche Golf & Spa by B Signature wraps a château, spa and course together near Missillac, while Domaine des Ormes offers a relaxed, family-friendly base with golf on site. Towards La Baule, Hôtel Barrière L'Hermitage La Baule brings beachfront elegance to the southern leg of a trip.

Best time to play golf in Brittany

Brittany golf is a summer game. The season runs broadly May to September, with the long, mild days of June, July and August giving the most reliable weather and firmest fairways — ideal for the coastal courses around Dinard and Saint-Malo, where the sea breeze is part of the challenge.

May and September are lovely shoulder months: softer light, fewer crowds and pleasant temperatures, though a passing Atlantic shower is always possible. Winters here are cool, damp and often wet, so we generally steer Brittany trips into the warmer half of the year. Pack a light waterproof whatever the month — this is an Atlantic coast, and the weather can turn quickly.

A sense of Brittany

History & heritage

Brittany wears its own identity proudly — a Celtic region with its own language, flag and festivals, closer in spirit to Cornwall and Wales than to Paris. Walled Saint-Malo, the old corsair city, is the cultural anchor: ramparts you can walk, a tidal causeway to the fort of the bay, and a maritime swagger born of privateers and explorers.

Across the water, Dinard is Belle Époque seaside elegance — striped bathing tents, grand villas and a long British connection that helped plant golf here in the first place. Inland, moated châteaux like the one cradled by La Bretesche tell the older, feudal story of a region that has always guarded its difference.

Food & wine

This is one of France's great larders, and the sea does the heavy lifting. Brittany is oyster and shellfish country — Cancale's beds are famous — alongside lobster, langoustines and the day's catch from small ports all along the coast. Sweet and savoury galettes and crêpes are the regional staple, best with a bowl of local cider.

Brittany isn't a wine region, so cider and the apple brandy lambig take pride of place, with salted-butter caramel (caramel au beurre salé) and far breton for pudding. At the southern, Loire-facing edge near Nantes and La Baule, the crisp white Muscadet enters the picture — a perfect match for a plate of oysters after golf.

Beyond the fairways

There is plenty to fold into a non-golf afternoon. Walk the ramparts of Saint-Malo and time the tide for the causeway crossing to the bay's island fort, or wander the grand seafront and casino set of Dinard on the opposite shore.

The Côte d'Émeraude and the pink-granite coast reward a slow drive, with sheltered coves, oyster ports like Cancale, and clifftop paths above the Channel. Inland, the moated château at La Bretesche and the gardens and grounds of estates like Domaine des Ormes make easy excursions. Towards the south, the long sandy crescent at La Baule is one of Europe's finest urban beaches — ideal for a rest day between rounds.

Getting around & exploring

Brittany is best explored by car, and a hire car is what we'd usually recommend — it gives you the freedom to link the clifftop courses around Dinard and Saint-Malo with the inland and southern layouts at your own pace, and to detour to an oyster port or beach along the way.

Distances are manageable: the Côte d'Émeraude cluster sits close together, while the run south towards Nantes and La Baule is a comfortable drive on good roads. Estate stays such as Domaine de la Bretesche and Golf Hotel Saint Malo put a course on your doorstep, reducing daily driving when you want it. We map the routes and tee times so the itinerary flows.

Getting there

Brittany is one of the more accessible French regions for UK golfers. Ferries cross directly to Saint-Malo, making it genuinely possible to bring your own car and clubs, while the regional airports at Rennes, Nantes and Dinard put you within easy reach of the courses.

Flights are not included in our prices — we are a ground-only operator — but we can arrange them as a separate, ATOL-protected add-on if you'd like us to handle the whole trip. Whether you fly, sail or drive down through France, we build the ground arrangements — courses, transfers and hotels — around how you choose to arrive.

Good to know

  • Ground-only: our prices cover hotels, golf and transfers. Flights are a separate ATOL-protected add-on we can arrange on request.
  • We are not an ABTA member — our trade credentials are ATOL (for flights), PTS and IATA.
  • Plan for summer: May to September is the season; winters are cool and wet, so we steer Brittany trips into the warmer months.
  • Weather: Atlantic and changeable — bring a light waterproof even in high summer, especially for the coastal courses.
  • Tides matter: around Saint-Malo and Dinard the sea moves fast; we'll flag any tide-timed sights worth planning around.
  • Drive it: a hire car makes the region, linking the Côte d'Émeraude courses with the inland and southern layouts.
  • Hand-built: every Brittany itinerary is curated, hand-priced and shaped around your dates, group and chosen courses — drawing on relationships we've held since 1981.

Frequently asked questions

Golf holidays in Brittany — answers to the questions our golfers ask most.

How long is LeShuttle crossing time to France

The Eurotunnel LeShuttle from Folkestone to Calais takes about 35 minutes, which makes a self-drive trip genuinely easy for the Northern France golf resorts. Le Touquet, Hardelot and the courses around the Somme are roughly two to three hours on from Calais, so you can load the clubs, drive on and be on the first tee the same day, and on those breaks we can include the crossing in the price. For the south and southwest, such as Biarritz, the Riviera and Provence, most golfers fly into Nice, Marseille, Biarritz or Bordeaux and we arrange transfers on the ground.

How much does a golf holiday in France cost?

Golf holidays in France start from £235 (≈ €265) (≈ $305) (≈ CA$435) (≈ AU$435) (≈ NZ$535) (≈ CHF 245) pp with Golf Planet Holidays. That is a tailor-made ground package, and the final price depends on your hotel, the courses you play and the season.

When is the best time to play golf in France?

May, June, September and October are the best months, with comfortable temperatures and courses in peak condition. The south of France stays playable into late autumn.

Where should I play golf in France?

There are more than 700 golf courses in France. As first steps we would recommend Northern France. There are ten great courses here.  Chat with us about the various choices if you wish to venture further afield.

How many golf courses are there in France?

We feature 130 courses and 102 resorts across France including Saint Malo Golf Club and Sept Tours Golf Club. Your specialist matches the courses to your group's standard and budget.

Is it easy to get around in France?

Getting around France is straightforward. Self-driving is the most popular option — if you've come via Le Shuttle, you already have your car. Trains are excellent for city-to-city travel, particularly from Paris to Bordeaux (2 hours on the TGV).
