The wind does most of the defending at St Francis Bay, a flat, friendly members' course laid out along the oceanfront east of Knysna.

• Solo golfersSt Francis prides itself on hospitality and club spirit, and turning up alone here usually means leaving with new playing partners. A genuinely welcoming place to get a friendly game.
• Higher handicapsWith no climb to speak of and only a couple of water hazards, the course itself is kind. Pick a calm morning though, because when the sea breeze gets up the scoring changes completely.
• SocietiesA natural stop on an Eastern Cape swing. The par 71 will not grind a group down, the welcome is genuine, and the seaside setting gives the nineteenth hole plenty to talk about.
