Costa Navarino: a golf holiday in Messinia built for two

Greece
Four golf courses sit on one estate in Messinia, the quiet south-west corner of the Peloponnese. That changes how a couple plans a week here. Nobody has to compromise. One of you can be on the first tee at the Navarino Hills clubhouse while the other is in a thalassotherapy pool, and you meet for lunch by the Ionian without anyone having driven anywhere. The whole place is built around the town of Pylos, a working Greek harbour that has nothing to do with golf and is all the better for it. Costa Navarino is the rare resort that earns the word luxury without making you feel managed.

Why Costa Navarino works as a couples golf holiday

The maths is simple. Two people, different mornings, no friction. The estate spreads across two areas, Navarino Dunes and Navarino Hills, linked by a complimentary shuttle, so a golfer and a non-golfer can each have the day they want and still have dinner together by the sea.

The golf is genuinely good, not a token nine holes bolted onto a beach hotel. The Dunes Course is a Bernhard Langer design with European Golf Design, and it earns its name. The holes nearest the water take on links character, with tall dunes dividing some of the fairways above a golden beach, and there are sea and river views that pull your eye off the line more than once. It sits right next to The Romanos and the Westin, so you can walk to the first tee.

For the partner who would rather not play, the resort is set up properly. Spa, beaches, pools, and the Ionian a short stroll away. This is greece golf holidays for couples done without either of you feeling parked while the other has the fun.

The four courses, and which to play first

You have a real choice here, which is unusual for a single estate. The two original courses sit at the Dunes. The two newer ones, the Hills and International Olympic Academy courses, opened in 2022 up at Navarino Hills, both from the firm led by double Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal. They share the same clubhouse but ask different questions of you. The Hills has wider fairways and is the kinder of the pair, which makes it the sensible opening round if your handicaps differ.

The Bay Course is the strategist’s round. Robert Trent Jones Jr laid out a par 70 that rewards position over power, and it is a few minutes by shuttle from the Westin and Romanos, closer still to the W. If one of you hits it long and the other plays smart, the Bay tends to even things up by the back nine.

My honest steer. Play the Hills first to find your feet, save the Dunes for a calm morning when the wind is down, because those seaside holes are far more enjoyable when you are not fighting a gale. Green fees and rounds are built into a tailor-made stay and play break rather than bought one by one, so we shape the order around your dates.

Where to stay: the three resorts compared

All three hotels share the estate, the beaches and the golf, so the choice is really about mood.

The Romanos (from £920 (≈ €1,055) (≈ $1,225) (≈ CA$1,725) (≈ AU$1,745) (≈ NZ$2,115) (≈ CHF 975) pp) is the indulgent one, open spring to early autumn only, with 321 rooms and suites and nearly half of them carrying their own infinity pool. There is a large main pool, a newer long pool with its own bar, and a private beach for a swim or a long lunch by the Ionian. If this is an anniversary or you simply want the room to be part of the holiday, this is the one.

The Westin Resort (from £665 (≈ €765) (≈ $885) (≈ CA$1,245) (≈ AU$1,255) (≈ NZ$1,525) (≈ CHF 705) pp) is the all-rounder and, frankly, the one I book most for couples. It sits at Navarino Dunes with the golf on the doorstep, it is five-star in the proper sense, and the price leaves room in the budget for more golf or a longer stay.

W Costa Navarino (from £825 (≈ €945) (≈ $1,105) (≈ CA$1,545) (≈ AU$1,565) (≈ NZ$1,895) (≈ CHF 875) pp) is the grown-ups’ choice in the literal sense. It takes adults and over-12s only, sits beachfront, and has the more design-led feel, with infinity-pool suites and private villas. A couple wanting a quieter, adult crowd should look here first.

What the non-golfer actually does all week

This is the part that decides whether a golf trip is a holiday or a hostage situation. Costa Navarino was planned with the non-playing partner in mind, not as an afterthought.

The spa is the headline. Expect a serious thalassotherapy and treatment offering, the kind you book a half-day around rather than a quick massage. Beyond that, the beaches are the draw, with the warm, clear Ionian for swimming, and the resort’s pools to drift between. The Romanos private beach is set up for a full day of it, drink and lunch included.

Off the estate, Pylos rewards a wander. The harbour, the old fort, a slow lunch of Messinian food and local olive oil, then back for the spa before the golfers return. Messinia is olive country and it shows on the plate. One caveat worth saying plainly. This is a resort estate, not a town, so if your partner wants shops, bars and street life every night, the magic of the place may feel a little quiet. For most couples that calm is the point. For a few it is not, and it is better you hear that from me now.

When to go, and the one honest caveat

Late April to June and September into early October are the sweet spots. The sea is warm enough, the courses are at their best, and the heat is comfortable rather than punishing. July and August are hot and busier, fine if you build the golf around early tee times and keep the afternoons for the pool.

The caveat about the Romanos is genuine and easy to miss. It only opens spring to early autumn, so a shoulder-season trip in late October or winter means looking at the Westin or W instead. We check opening dates before we quote, so you are never sold a stay that is shut.

Getting there is straightforward via Kalamata, with the resort roughly 45 minutes on. We arrange the airport transfers as part of the package. Flights are an add-on we can book for you under our ATOL cover where flights are included, or you are welcome to arrange your own and we handle everything on the ground.

Where our specialists would put you

A few combinations we book again and again for couples on the romanos golf holiday and across the wider estate:

Westin Resort Costa Navarino (from £665 (≈ €765) (≈ $885) (≈ CA$1,245) (≈ AU$1,255) (≈ NZ$1,525) (≈ CHF 705) pp) with rounds on the Dunes and the Hills. The reliable, well-priced week that suits most couples.

The Romanos (from £920 (≈ €1,055) (≈ $1,225) (≈ CA$1,725) (≈ AU$1,745) (≈ NZ$2,115) (≈ CHF 975) pp) with an infinity-pool suite for a special anniversary, golf for one of you and the private beach for the other.

W Costa Navarino (from £825 (≈ €945) (≈ $1,105) (≈ CA$1,545) (≈ AU$1,565) (≈ NZ$1,895) (≈ CHF 875) pp) for an adults-only stay, paired with the strategic Bay Course a short shuttle away.

• A full messinia golf week mixing the Dunes and the Hills and Olympic Academy courses, so you play all four across the trip.

Everything is tailor-made and ground-based, so we shape the stay, the tee times and the order of play around your dates and your handicaps. Tell us what kind of week you want and your specialist takes it from there. We have been arranging golf holidays since 1981.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Costa Navarino from the UK?

Fly to Kalamata, then it is roughly 45 minutes by road to the resort. We arrange the airport transfers as part of your package. Flights can be added under our ATOL cover where flights are included, or you can book your own and we handle everything on the ground.

When is the best time of year for a Costa Navarino golf holiday?

Late April to June and September into early October are the sweet spots, with warm sea, courses at their best and comfortable heat. July and August are hot and busier, which suits early tee times and lazy afternoons by the pool. One thing to note: The Romanos only opens spring to early autumn, so a winter trip means the Westin or W instead.

Which Costa Navarino course should we play first?

The Hills is the kindest of the four, with wider fairways, so it makes a sensible opening round if your handicaps differ. Save the Dunes for a calmer morning, as its seaside holes are far more enjoyable out of the wind. The Bay Course rewards strategy over power and tends to even out a mismatched pairing.

What is the difference between the Westin, The Romanos and the W?

All three share the estate, beaches and golf. The Westin (from £665 (≈ €765) (≈ $885) (≈ CA$1,245) (≈ AU$1,255) (≈ NZ$1,525) (≈ CHF 705) pp) is the well-priced all-rounder at Navarino Dunes with golf on the doorstep. The Romanos (from £920 (≈ €1,055) (≈ $1,225) (≈ CA$1,725) (≈ AU$1,745) (≈ NZ$2,115) (≈ CHF 975) pp) is the indulgent choice, open spring to early autumn, with many infinity-pool suites and a private beach. The W (from £825 (≈ €945) (≈ $1,105) (≈ CA$1,545) (≈ AU$1,565) (≈ NZ$1,895) (≈ CHF 875) pp) is beachfront, adults and over-12s only, with a more design-led feel.

Can one of us play golf while the other relaxes?

Easily, and this is the resort’s strength. The golfer can be on the first tee while the other is in the spa or by the pool, and you meet for lunch by the sea with nobody having driven anywhere. The complimentary shuttle links the Dunes and Hills areas so neither of you is tied to the other’s day.

Are the Costa Navarino holidays tailor-made?

Yes. Every trip is ground-based and built around your dates, your chosen hotel and your handicaps, with tee times and the order of play shaped to suit. Your named specialist arranges the stay, the rounds and the transfers. We have been organising golf holidays since 1981.
