Hotel Barriere Le Royal, La Baule, is a pretty five-star hotel and one of three outstanding Barriere properties in this glamorous resort. It’s the midsize one with 87 bedrooms but with the facilities of a much larger hotel.

The two restaurants offer classic fare with the seaside Le Ponton being our favourite, but Le Fouquet’s is a classy and enjoyable affair too. The hotel bar is possibly the best in town.

The spa is very popular among the discerning and regular visitors from Paris – and that says more than any of our comments. The 36 holes at La Baule are just 20 minutes drive away.
