Our take
Getting onto Muirfield is half the work, we apply on your behalf with your club and handicap details, and the golf repays every bit of the effort.
- Serious golfersA regular Open host with every challenge the world's best face present and waiting when you visit. The 3rd and the 7th are the holes you will still be replaying on the drive home, usually with the Forth wind in the retelling.
- Buddy tripsPlan around the formats, fourballs go out in the mornings with singles and foursomes otherwise, so get your dates and handicap details to us early and let us make the application for the group.
- Higher handicapsYour handicap goes on the application, and this is not the place to discover your game has gone missing. The land looks flat but there is more rise and fall in it than you expect, and the wind does the examining.
Tell us who’s coming and how you like to play, and we’ll shape the right trip around you.
What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 74 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually south-westerly, averaging 17 km/h, gusting to 58. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 2 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Harry Colt (1925), on Old Tom Morris's 1891 layout; later refined by Tom Simpson and Martin Hawtree.
The holes that will cost you. The 3rd, the 7th and the 16th. The 3rd is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
Hole by hole — how we would play it
Terrain and prevailing-weather data, read hole by hole. It is our own assessment of how the course plays, not an official course or slope rating.
