On coastal land that has hosted golf for over 100 years, DJ Russell has created the 18 holes of the Dirleton Links. The two courses here are a welcome addition to this great golfing playground. Built on land which has Muirfield as its neighbour on one side and Archerfield Links on the other. These new courses are adding another dimension to quality golf on the East Lothian.
The Fidra golf course at Archerfield Links, East Lothian, is a unique mixture of pine forest and fast-running links. Out here it feels as if it's just you and the course. Above you only open skies and whispering pines, ahead of you sweeping fairways beckon.
Our take
You do not get Muirfield as your next-door neighbour without serious golfing ground, and DJ Russell's Dirleton course makes the most of land that has held golf for over a century.
- Serious golfersThe links and woodland mix keeps changing the question, and the 3rd and the 7th bite before you have settled. The wind is rarely quiet on this stretch of the East Lothian coast.
- SocietiesFlat walking with barely 70 metres of climb and only three spots where water threatens, so the whole group gets round together and nobody loses their day by the turn.
- Buddy tripsTwo courses on one site puts a 36-hole day on the table, and the Fidra plays a different tune to the Dirleton, which keeps the second round interesting.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 73 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually south-westerly, averaging 17 km/h, gusting to 58. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
