ABOUT THE GOLF COURSE
Golf National Albatros, near Paris, is a beast of a course, rated in Europe's top 25. Annual host of the French Open it will best known as the home of the European Ryder Cup victory in 2018.
From start to finish, the test is relentless with slick and large greens, daunting (but not overly imposing) water hazards and quality fairways – all framed by “stadium mounds” affording the player the sensation of seclusion and the spectator a bird’s eye view of several holes. The Albatros was designed by the great Robert von Hagge but has been attributed to Hubert Chesneau. The clubhouse is relatively simple but professional. This is a “tick list” golf course and well worth playing alongside its sister course, Golf National Aigle.

Home of the 2018 Ryder Cup and the annual French Open, the Albatros is rated in Europe's top 25 and earns every bit of its reputation.
- Serious golfersYou get the Ryder Cup course in tournament condition, slick large greens, water in play over thirty times, and stadium mounds that make every hole feel like its own arena. The 9th and 14th wreck more cards than anything else.
- Higher handicapsThe examination is relentless from the first hole and the water threatens on over thirty occasions; higher handicaps will lose plenty of balls. Play the Aigle first and be honest about whether you want this.
- Buddy tripsThe one every group wants on the itinerary, and the flat walk means the legs will last even if the card does not. Book it as the centrepiece and build the rest of the trip around it.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 78 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually south-westerly, averaging 11 km/h, gusting to 36. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. Water is very much in play across this course. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
