Heathland golf on sandy soil, where the châteaux begin.

Loire Valley golf holidays

Drive off the LeShuttle and an hour south of Paris the Sologne opens up: Martin Hawtree's sandy heathland at Les Aisses, Cabell Robinson's pines and water at Orléans Limère. You play from La Ferté-Saint-Aubin, château country starts at the gate, and the car crossing is part of the price.

The Loire Valley is France at its most graceful: a broad river threading past châteaux, vineyards and walled towns between Orléans and Anjou. It is a region built for unhurried golf, where a morning round at a forested course gives way to an afternoon among Renaissance palaces and an evening with a bottle of Vouvray. The golf here is quietly serious. The renowned Les Bordes Golf Club near Saint-Laurent-Nouan is one of continental Europe's most admired layouts, while Orléans Limère and Les Aisses offer pine-and-heathland golf within easy reach of the river. Around Tours and Anjou, courses such as Touraine, Tours Ardrée and Anjou sit amid the very landscape that makes the Loire a UNESCO World Heritage site.

We have arranged Loire Valley golf since 1981. Every itinerary is hand-built and hand-priced around your dates, your group and the courses you want to play.

Why play golf in Loire Valley

  • Les Bordes, near Saint-Laurent-Nouan, ranks among the finest courses in continental Europe — a test that rewards a properly planned trip
  • A genuine spread of character, from the heath and pines of Les Aisses and Orléans Limère to the parkland of Touraine and Anjou
  • Courses set within a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of châteaux, river and vineyard — golf and sightseeing in the same day
  • Quiet fairways and an unhurried pace, well away from the resort crowds of the coast
  • Compact geography: bases around Orléans, Tours and Anjou put several courses within comfortable driving distance
  • A region we have hand-picked and refined over four decades of relationships with its clubs and hotels

The courses you’ll play

The Loire's golf rewards variety. Les Bordes Golf Club at Saint-Laurent-Nouan is the headline — a celebrated, demanding layout carved through forest and water that draws golfers from across Europe. Nearby, Les Aisses Golf Club at La Ferté-Saint-Aubin and Orléans Limère Golf Club offer classic heath-and-pine golf, while Orléans Donnery Golf Club at Donnery sits handily to the east of the city.

Towards Tours, Touraine Golf Club at Ballan-Miré and Tours Ardrée Golf Club at Saint-Antoine-du-Rocher provide mature parkland rounds, with Château Golf des 7 Tours at Courcelles-de-Touraine close at hand. In Anjou, Anjou Golf Club at Champigné, Baugé-Pontigné Golf Club and Sablé-Solesmes Golf Club complete a rich, well-spaced rota.

Where you’ll stay

We hand-pick stays that suit the tone of the trip. Château des Sept Tours at Courcelles-de-Touraine and Château de Beaulieu at Joué-lès-Tours bring the proper Loire château experience, both well placed for the Tours courses. L'Hostellerie du Château les Muids at La Ferté-Saint-Aubin sits conveniently for Les Aisses and Les Bordes.

For a city base on the river, the Mercure Orléans Centre Bords de Loire puts you within reach of the Orléans clubs. Over in Anjou, the Grand Hôtel de Solesmes at Solesmes pairs neatly with Sablé-Solesmes and Anjou. We match the hotel to your group, your courses and your pace, never the other way round.

Best time to play golf in Loire Valley

The Loire is a summer game. The season runs roughly from May to September, when the long, warm days and settled weather show the river and its courses at their best. Late spring and early autumn are particularly rewarding: the fairways are in fine condition, the vineyards are at their most photogenic, and the heat is comfortable for a full round.

Winters here are cool and often wet, and shorter daylight makes golf less appealing, so this is not a year-round destination in the way the southern coasts are. For the combination of good golf and warm châteaux-country evenings, we steer most trips towards June, July, September or the shoulder weeks either side.

A sense of Loire Valley

History & heritage

Few golf regions come wrapped in such history. The Loire Valley between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes is a UNESCO World Heritage site, prized for its Renaissance châteaux and the cultivated landscape that surrounds them. A round near Tours or Orléans places you among the great houses and walled towns that drew the French court here centuries ago.

Orléans carries the legend of Joan of Arc; Tours offers a handsome old quarter of timbered streets and a soaring cathedral. Anjou and the Sarthe add abbeys and market towns to the mix. We build in time for the culture, so a golf trip here becomes a proper Loire trip.

Food & wine

This is one of France's great larders. The Loire's kitchens lean on river fish, rillettes from Tours, goat's cheeses and the produce of the valley, served simply and well. It is unfussy, generous cooking that pairs naturally with a relaxed golfing week.

The wines are the region's quiet glory. Vouvray and Montlouis bring crisp and off-dry Chenin Blanc near Tours; Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé lie to the east beyond Orléans; and Anjou and Saumur add still and sparkling whites, reds and rosés. We are glad to fold a tasting or a memorable dinner into your itinerary, matched to where you are playing.

Beyond the fairways

The châteaux are the obvious draw, and rightly so — Chambord, Chenonceau, Amboise and Villandry's celebrated gardens are all within the region and make superb non-golf days for the whole group. The river itself invites gentle exploration, whether by car along its banks or by bicycle on the well-marked routes that thread the valley.

Beyond the great houses, there are the old quarters of Tours and Orléans to wander, abbeys around Solesmes, vineyards to visit and markets to browse. For partners and non-golfers, the Loire is one of the easiest regions in France to fill happily while the rest of the group plays.

Getting around & exploring

A hire car is the natural way to do the Loire. The courses sit across a wide arc from Anjou through Tours to Orléans, and a car lets you move easily between hotel, fairway and château on your own timetable. Roads are good and distances between bases are manageable.

We map your week so the driving stays sensible — typically pairing a hotel with the two or three nearest courses rather than crossing the region each morning. Where you would rather not drive, we can arrange private transfers between your hotel and the clubs. Tell us your preference and we will build the logistics around it.

Getting there

The Loire is one of the most accessible regions in France from the UK and Ireland. The valley is well served by the autoroute network and by France's high-speed rail, with Tours and Orléans both reachable from Paris in around an hour by train. Paris's airports are the usual gateway, with onward car hire or rail into the valley.

Flights are arranged as a separate, ATOL-protected add-on to your holiday — they are never bundled in, so you keep full flexibility over carrier, airport and timings. We are happy to advise on the most convenient routing for your group and to coordinate it with your arrival into the region.

  • Car recommended: the courses span Anjou, Tours and Orléans, though private transfers can be arranged
  • More than golf: we routinely weave in châteaux, vineyards and river days for mixed groups
  • Curated since 1981: four decades of relationships with the region's clubs and hotels stand behind every booking

Frequently asked questions

Golf holidays in Loire Valley — answers to the questions our golfers ask most.

How long is LeShuttle crossing time to France

The Eurotunnel LeShuttle from Folkestone to Calais takes about 35 minutes, which makes a self-drive trip genuinely easy for the Northern France golf resorts. Le Touquet, Hardelot and the courses around the Somme are roughly two to three hours on from Calais, so you can load the clubs, drive on and be on the first tee the same day, and on those breaks we can include the crossing in the price. For the south and southwest, such as Biarritz, the Riviera and Provence, most golfers fly into Nice, Marseille, Biarritz or Bordeaux and we arrange transfers on the ground.

How much does a golf holiday in France cost?

Golf holidays in France start from £235 (≈ €265) (≈ $315) (≈ CA$435) (≈ AU$445) (≈ NZ$535) (≈ CHF 245) pp with Golf Planet Holidays. That is a tailor-made ground package, and the final price depends on your hotel, the courses you play and the season.

When is the best time to play golf in France?

May, June, September and October are the best months, with comfortable temperatures and courses in peak condition. The south of France stays playable into late autumn.

Where should I play golf in France?

There are more than 700 golf courses in France. As first steps we would recommend Northern France. There are ten great courses here.  Chat with us about the various choices if you wish to venture further afield.
