South Africa's Southern Cape is the most concentrated stretch of championship golf in the country, strung along the Garden Route between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean. At its heart sits Fancourt Golf Estate near George, with three courses including The Links, while clifftop and lagoon courses at Mossel Bay, Knysna, Herolds Bay and St Francis Bay sit within an easy drive of one another. It is a region of fynbos, indigenous forest and dramatic coastline, where a golf trip and a touring holiday become the same thing.

We have arranged South Africa golf since 1981. Every itinerary is hand-built and hand-priced around your dates, your group and the courses you want to play.

Why play golf in Southern Cape

  • A genuine multi-course destination: Fancourt's three layouts, plus Pinnacle Point, Oubaii, Simola, Pezula and St Francis Links, all reachable along one coastal route.
  • Variety of character within a short radius — parkland, clifftop, lagoon-side and links-style golf.
  • The Links at Fancourt, one of South Africa's most acclaimed inland courses, anchors the region.
  • Warm, settled conditions during the European winter make it a true winter-sun golf escape.
  • Garden Route scenery between rounds — mountains, forest and ocean rather than motorway.
  • Hand-picked venues we know well, matched to your group's ability and pace.

The courses you’ll play

Fancourt Golf Estate is the cornerstone, with three distinct courses — Outeniqua, Montagu and The Links — giving you a complete trip on a single estate. Along the coast, Pinnacle Point Golf Club at Mossel Bay plays out over dramatic cliffs above the sea, while Oubaii Golf Club at Herolds Bay sits in a folded coastal valley near George. Eastward, Simola Golf Club and Pezula Golf Club both look down over Knysna and its lagoon, and St Francis Links at St Francis Bay brings a windswept, links-inspired test to the eastern end of the route. We hand-pick the rotation around your dates and tee preferences.

Where you’ll stay

Fancourt is the natural base for many Southern Cape trips, a self-contained estate near George that puts Outeniqua, Montagu and The Links on your doorstep and the wider Garden Route within reach. From there, the coastal clubs at Mossel Bay, Herolds Bay, Knysna and St Francis Bay open up as day rounds or as staging points if you prefer to move along the route. We arrange accommodation to suit how you want to play — settle in one place and play out, or progress eastward toward St Francis Bay. Every stay is matched to your group, your budget and the courses on your schedule.

Best time to play golf in Southern Cape

The Southern Cape is in the southern hemisphere, so its seasons are the reverse of ours — which makes it a genuine winter-sun golf escape. From November to March, while the UK is cold, the Garden Route is warm and well into its summer, ideal for combining golf with the coast. This stretch is the most reliable window for sunshine and long playable days. The shoulder months either side still offer pleasant conditions, and the region is greener and more temperate than the South African interior thanks to its ocean setting. We will pin your dates to the conditions you want and the courses you most want to play.

A sense of Southern Cape

History & heritage

The Garden Route takes its name from the lush belt of forest, fynbos and coastline running along the Southern Cape, and the towns strung along it — George, Mossel Bay, Knysna and St Francis Bay — each have their own character. George sits beneath the Outeniqua Mountains as the regional hub; Knysna is built around its famous lagoon and forested hills; Mossel Bay carries the Cape's early maritime history. It is a part of South Africa where indigenous forest, Cape coastal culture and small-town pace come together, giving a golf trip here a strong sense of place between rounds.

Food & wine

The Southern Cape leans on its ocean and its land. The coastal towns — Mossel Bay, Knysna, St Francis Bay — are known for seafood, with Knysna in particular associated with its oysters and lagoon catch. Inland around George and the Outeniqua foothills, the cooking turns to hearty Cape fare and produce from the surrounding farmland. South Africa's wine culture runs throughout, and a relaxed dinner after golf is part of the rhythm here. We can build in time for the towns and tables you want to experience, woven around your tee times rather than rushed between them.

Beyond the fairways

The Garden Route is one of South Africa's great touring drives, and there is plenty to fold in around the golf. Knysna's lagoon and surrounding forest, the coastline at Mossel Bay and Herolds Bay, and the beaches and dunes near St Francis Bay all reward time off the course. The Outeniqua Mountains above George frame the inland scenery, and the route between towns is an attraction in itself. For non-golfing partners or rest days, the region balances coast, forest and mountain within short distances, so a golf trip easily becomes a wider Garden Route holiday.

Getting around & exploring

The Southern Cape is best explored by car — the Garden Route runs broadly along the coast, linking George, Mossel Bay, Herolds Bay, Knysna and St Francis Bay, with the courses spaced out along the way. George serves as the regional gateway and a sensible hub, with Fancourt close by. Driving distances between the clubs are manageable, which is what makes a multi-course trip here so natural. We arrange your transfers and ground logistics so the route between Fancourt, Pinnacle Point, Oubaii, Simola, Pezula and St Francis Links is straightforward, with your clubs and your schedule taken care of.

Getting there

George is the regional airport for the Southern Cape and the most convenient arrival point for Fancourt and the Garden Route courses, typically reached via a connection through a major South African hub. From the UK, that means an international flight followed by a domestic connection into George. Flights are arranged as a separate, ATOL-protected add-on to your itinerary rather than bundled in — we are a ground-only operator — so you are free to use your own preferred routing if you wish. We will advise on the most sensible connections for your dates and handle the onward transfer to your base.

Good to know

  • We are a tailor-made, ground-only operator: your golf, accommodation and transfers are arranged together; flights are a separate ATOL-protected add-on, never bundled in.
  • Best window for winter sun is roughly November to March (southern-hemisphere summer).
  • A hire car or arranged transfers make the difference here — the courses are spread along the Garden Route.
  • George is the practical gateway and Fancourt a popular base, with three courses on one estate.
  • South Africa is a long-haul trip — allow for the international flight plus a domestic connection into George.
  • Every itinerary is hand-built and hand-priced around your dates, your group and the courses you want to play; we have arranged South Africa golf since 1981.

If you prefer warmer weather, the summer months (May to October) are ideal for golf in regions like Kwazulu Natal, where temperatures are pleasant and the courses are in top condition. Regardless of when you visit, South Africa offers fantastic golf all year long.

What are the best golf courses to play in South Africa?

Notable courses include Royal Cape Golf Club in the Western Cape, ranked among the country’s top courses, The Links at Fancourt, Erinvale, and Pearl Valley. Do I need a handicap to play golf in South Africa?

While most golf courses in South Africa don’t require a specific handicap for visitors, we always recommend checking with us in advance, especially for high-end or championship-level courses. The last thing we want is for you to have an unsuitable round of golf. Generally, golfers with a handicap of 24 for men and 36 for women will find the courses accessible. Our expert team can help ensure you have all the information you need to book your perfect round. For extra support, why not book on one of our annual golf tours? Most of our visitors arrive in Cape Town and spend a few days exploring the city, with private airport transfers included. Car hire is highly popular in the Western Cape, and most importantly, it’s very safe. We recommend hiring a car, as it allows you to make the most of your trip and experience the best that South Africa has to offer. However, we are delighted to arrange private transfers if you prefer.
