About Fancourt Golf Estate (Outeniqua
Fancourt Golf Estate on South Africa's Garden Route encompasses three Gary Player-designed 18-hole courses spread across 613 hectares near George. The flagship Links (par 73, 6,930 m) replicates a Scottish links experience with man-made dunes and has been ranked No.1 in South Africa; the parkland Outeniqua (par 72, 6,312 m) winds through white-walled villas framed by the Outeniqua Mountains; and Montagu (par 72, 6,714 m) presents rolling tree-lined fairways and strategic bunkering. All three are available to resort guests, making Fancourt one of the premier golf destinations on the continent.
Our take
Fancourt hands you the number one ranked course in South Africa plus two more that would headline almost anywhere else.
- Serious golfersThe Links is the one you travel for, a Player built dunescape ranked top in the country, par 73 and every bit of its 6,930 metres. Book it early, it is the round everyone wants.
- Higher handicapsOuteniqua is the gentler of the three and the whole estate is virtually flat, barely a rise all round. The water is the thing to respect, it turns up on more holes than you expect.
- SocietiesFifty four holes without moving hotel settles the itinerary by itself. One course a day, Outeniqua then Montagu, and save the Links for the deciding round.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 7 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually westerly, averaging 10 km/h, gusting to 35. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. Water is very much in play across this course. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Gary Player.
The holes that will cost you. The 5th and the 4th. The 5th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
Hole by hole — how we would play it

The course at a glance
The Links hosted the 2003 Presidents Cup (famously tied between Tiger Woods and Ernie Els)
