The Costa Brava is the quieter, more cultured face of Catalan golf — pine forest and the Empordà plain rolling down to a coastline of coves and stone villages, with Girona and Barcelona bookending it. Golf here is a year-round companion to the table rather than the whole holiday: a morning at Platja de Pals followed by an afternoon in Begur or a long lunch in Girona's old town. The courses are mature and serious, the resorts understated, and the rhythm closer to a Mediterranean retreat than a golf factory. It rewards travellers who want fairways and a sense of place in equal measure.

The courses you’ll play

The anchor is Platja de Pals Golf Course in Pals, one of the oldest and most characterful layouts on this coast, threaded through umbrella pines near the sea. Inland, Camiral Golf and Wellness Resort at Caldes de Malavella is the region's marquee venue — a championship resort course of real stature. Empordà Links & Forest near Girona gives you two contrasting nines, the open links-style holes and the tighter forest run, on a single visit. Golf d'Aro at Santa Cristina d'Aro climbs into the hills above the coast for dramatic elevation and sea glimpses. To the south, Real Club de Golf El Prat near Barcelona is a famous, multi-loop members' club worth the drive. We hand-pick the mix and the tee times around your group.

Best time to play golf in Costa Brava

Spring and autumn are the sweet spots. From April into June the Empordà is green, the wildflowers are out and the courses are at their best before the summer heat builds. September and October bring warm sea, settled light and quieter fairways — arguably the finest golfing weeks of the year here.

High summer is hot and busy, more suited to early tee times and afternoons by the water. Winter is mild but cooler and noticeably quieter; courses stay playable on fair days, but this is not a winter-sun destination in the way the Canaries or Morocco are. For a pure golf trip, aim for the shoulders.

A sense of Costa Brava

History & heritage

Girona is the cultural heart of the trip — a walled medieval city of stone bridges, a soaring cathedral and one of Europe's best-preserved Jewish quarters, all within a tight, walkable old town. The Costa Brava villages each have their own pull: Begur's hilltop and Indiano mansions, Pals with its restored stone centre, and the working harbours along the coast. This is Catalonia, with its own language and a fierce sense of identity, and the inland Empordà keeps a slower, agricultural pace. A base at Ciutat de Girona Hotel or Aigua Blava Hotel in Begur puts you in the thick of it between rounds.

Food & wine

The Empordà is one of Spain's quiet gastronomic strongholds — sea-and-mountain Catalan cooking, fresh seafood from the coast, and a wine region (DO Empordà) producing characterful reds and whites just inland. Girona's old town is the obvious base for serious dining, but every coastal village rewards a long lunch of grilled fish, rice dishes and local Garnatxa. The rhythm here is unhurried: late lunches, vermouth before dinner, and dinner itself well into the evening. Pair a round at Empordà or Platja de Pals with a table nearby and the day looks after itself. We can point you to the towns and tables that suit each base.

Beyond the fairways

The coastline is the draw: a string of coves and beaches from Begur down to Platja d'Aro, best explored on foot via the cliff-top camí de ronda paths. Inland, the Empordà offers cycling, wine visits and the medieval villages of the plain. Girona's old town is a half-day in itself, and Barcelona's museums, architecture and beaches are within reach for a non-golf day or a stay either side at Petit Palace Opera Garden Hotel. Begur and Pals reward a slow wander, and the spa and wellness side of Camiral gives non-golfers a reason to linger. We build the rest days in around the golf, not the other way round.

Getting around & exploring

A hire car is the sensible choice. The region spreads from Barcelona in the south up through Girona to the coastal villages, and the courses sit a short drive apart rather than clustered on one site — having your own car turns four scattered venues into an easy week. Roads are good and distances modest: most of the Costa Brava courses and hotels are within 30–45 minutes of Girona. For a city-and-golf split, you can base in Girona or on the coast and drive to El Prat near Barcelona for the day. We arrange the transfers and car hire to fit your itinerary.

Getting there

Girona–Costa Brava airport is the closest gateway and the most convenient for the Empordà and the coast, with Barcelona airport a straightforward drive to the south and useful if you want a night in the city. Flights are arranged separately as an ATOL-protected add-on — we are ground-only, so we build the holiday on the ground and add flights to match if you'd like us to. From either airport it is a short, scenic drive to the courses and hotels. We hand-build each itinerary around your travel dates and preferred gateway.
