Robert von Hagge built two different courses here, an inland links and a woodland loop, and the hotel sits close enough that you can play both without touching the car.

• Serious golfersThe Links is the sterner of the pair, heavily bunkered with water threading through it, and von Hagge's shaping keeps you guessing on approach. Playing both over a weekend gives a genuine contrast of styles.
• Higher handicapsThe Forest course is the gentler day, tree-lined but fair; the Links will cost you shots in the sand. Both are flat walks, so thirty six holes over two days is no hardship.
• Buddy tripsGolf, hotel and restaurant on one site with thirty six holes to argue over makes this an easy trip to organise, and nobody has to drive anywhere after the first pint.
