Portugal Golf for North American Golfers: The Algarve, Lisbon and Madeira

Portugal
Think about what a long weekend at a name-brand US resort runs you now. Two rounds, a decent room, dinner out, and you’re well past what most people want to spend. Portugal flips that math. The golf is genuinely good, the courses sit close together, and a five-star room with an ocean view costs less than a mid-tier stay back home. Your dollar stretches, and the flight is shorter than you’d guess from the East Coast. This is a country that rewards a foursome of buddies and a couple looking for a week of golf and seafood in equal measure. Below we’ll walk through three areas worth your time, the Algarve, Lisbon and Madeira, then cover how you get there and when to go.

What your dollar actually buys here

Here is the honest pitch. In the Algarve and around Lisbon you can play championship courses in the morning, eat fresh-off-the-boat seafood at night, and book a hotel that would cost double in Scottsdale or Pebble. The towns are walkable, so you park the rental car after your round and stroll to dinner. English is widely spoken across the golf resorts, the food is excellent and inexpensive, and the people are easy to deal with. You get five-star without the sticker shock, and the courses are bunched tightly enough that you’re rarely driving more than half an hour to the first tee.

Golf Planet Holidays has built tailor-made trips since 1981, for golfers across the UK, the US, Canada and beyond. When you enquire you get one dedicated specialist, a real golfer, who plans the whole thing: courses, tee times, hotels, transfers. No call center, no cold calls. We’re ground specialists first, and we can also book your flights from major US and Canadian hubs, your nearest gateway, so the whole trip arrives as one plan. When we book those flights your trip is ATOL protected and your money is held safe until you travel, which matters when you’re arranging a big international trip with a company based overseas.

The Algarve: the heart of any Portugal golf vacation package

If you only have one week, the Algarve is where most North American golfers should point the car. The southern coast packs more good golf into a short stretch than almost anywhere in Europe, and the resort towns are set up for exactly this kind of trip. Vilamoura is the busiest hub, with a marina full of restaurants and bars and a cluster of courses within a few minutes’ drive. The Hyatt Regency Vilamoura Algarve sits minutes from those courses and 100 yards from the beach, and the Crowne Plaza Vilamoura sits right on the sand next to the marina, both easy bases for a guys’ golf trip that wants the action close at hand. For something quieter but still central, Vila Gale Ampalius is a popular four-star a short walk from Marina Beach.

West toward Portimao you’ll find one of the area’s grand old golf hotels. Penina Hotel & Golf Resort sits in 360 acres of wooded parkland, and Sir Henry Cotton’s Penina golf course still earns its reputation as a tough test from the back tees, with a back nine carrying four par fives. If your group plays a lot of golf, Amendoeira Golf Resort near Alcantarilha gives you two championship layouts on site, a Faldo course and an O’Connor Jnr course, in modern apartments and villas built for value.

The eastern Algarve is calmer and, in our view, underrated. Near Tavira the two courses at Quinta da Ria & Cima run along the edge of the Ria Formosa, with the Ria layout sitting on the cliffs above the inlet. If you want one course on this coast that’s worth building a day around, make it Monte Rei Golf & Country Club, tucked into the hills above Tavira and just 45 minutes from Faro Airport. It’s the one we’d tell you to book first. For the stay itself, Vila Gale Tavira keeps you away from the crowds, and The Magnolia Hotel at Quinta do Lago brings a 1950s Palm Springs feel right on the doorstep of the big-name courses.

Where our specialists would stay in Portugal

Lisbon and the coast at Cascais

A Lisbon golf vacation is the move for couples, or for a group that wants a real city alongside the golf. The capital is a short hop from a run of excellent courses along the Estoril coast, so you can split your week between city evenings and morning rounds by the Atlantic. The standout is Oitavos Dunes at Quinta da Marinha, which Golf Magazine has ranked inside the world’s top 60 and which rolls through umbrella pines down toward the sea. Stay on site at The Oitavos, a glass-and-steel five-star where every room has a balcony over the ocean or the course.

Cascais itself is the kind of seaside town that makes the trip. Vila Gale Cascais overlooks the water by the marina and leans into the local seafood. For old-world character there’s Hotel Albatroz, a 19th-century building looking straight out over the bay, and the Pousada Citadela, built inside a 17th-century fort with its own on-site art district. Up the coast near Obidos, the Praia D’El Rey Marriott gives you a five-star resort with its own championship course less than an hour from Lisbon, a familiar brand for anyone who wants that comfort on a first trip over.

Is Madeira worth adding?

Madeira is a different kind of stop, and it’s a fair question whether it fits a golf-first week. It’s an island out in the Atlantic, greener and more mountainous than the mainland, with a mild climate that holds up year-round. There’s less golf here than on the Algarve, so we’d frame it as a relaxed two- or three-night add-on rather than the spine of your trip, often paired with a few days in Lisbon. The base in Funchal is the Pestana Casino Park, a seafront hotel a couple of minutes’ walk from downtown, with a spa, an outdoor pool and an indoor heated pool. If you’ve got an extra few days and want to see a side of Portugal most golf groups skip, it earns its place.

Getting there from the US and Canada, and the best months

Flights are the easy part. There are direct services from East Coast hubs into Lisbon, and from there a short connection or an easy drive south puts you in the Algarve, with Faro the airport that serves the coast. From the West Coast or from Canada you’ll usually connect once, often through a European hub, and it’s still a manageable trip for a week of golf. We can book those flights from your nearest North American gateway and bundle them with your hotels, courses and private transfers so the whole thing lands as one itinerary. We won’t name specific airlines or promise a route, but we’ll find the sensible way over and back for your group.

On timing, spring and fall are the sweet spot. March through May and again from late September into November give you warm, settled golf weather and the courses at their best. Summer works too, though July and August on the Algarve get genuinely hot, so plan early tee times if you go then. Winter is the honest trade-off: it’s the value season and it’s mild, but you’ll see more wind off the Atlantic and the odd wet day, especially around Lisbon and on Madeira. For most North American groups, a week in May or October is the one to aim for.

A big thank you again Simon for organising our latest trip, this time to Quinta Do Lago. Your recommendation to include Ombria was well worth it ,you might need a few spare balls but it is a great course in the making and worth a visit.…

Frequently asked questions

How long is the flight to Portugal from the US?

From the East Coast it’s a shorter hop than most golfers expect, with direct services into Lisbon. From the West Coast or from Canada you’ll usually connect once, often through a European hub. We book flights from your nearest North American gateway and pair them with the rest of your trip.

What's the best time of year for a Portugal golf vacation?

Spring and fall. March through May and late September into November give warm, settled weather and courses in top shape. Summer is hot on the Algarve, so book early tee times. Winter is the value season, mild but windier and the odd wet day, especially around Lisbon and Madeira.

Is Portugal safe for North American travelers?

Portugal is consistently ranked among the safer countries in Europe. The golf resort areas around the Algarve and Lisbon are very used to international visitors, English is widely spoken, and getting around by rental car or private transfer is straightforward.

How much does a Portugal golf trip cost?

It depends on your hotels, the courses you play and how long you stay, but Portugal delivers strong value against a comparable US golf week. North American visitors see live US-dollar prices on the venue cards on this page, updated daily. There’s no payment due when you enquire.

Should we add Madeira to a golf trip?

Treat Madeira as a relaxed two- or three-night add-on rather than the main event, since there’s less golf than on the mainland. It pairs well with a few days in Lisbon, with the Pestana Casino Park in Funchal as an easy seafront base.

How does booking with a company overseas work?

You get one dedicated specialist, a real golfer, who plans courses, tee times, hotels and transfers start to finish, with a prompt reply by email. There’s no payment today to enquire, you can read real Google reviews, and when we book your flights the trip is ATOL protected with your money held safe until you travel.
