It is the corner of Portugal where one of you can play some of the country’s most exquisite golf in the morning, while the other lingers over coffee in cobbled Tavira, and you meet again for a long lunch with nobody watching the clock. Where you stay sets the tone, and the Eastern Algarve gives a couple room to breathe. The AP Cabanas Beach & Nature Hotel sits right by the lagoon at Cabanas de Tavira, a short water-taxi hop from a long ribbon of sandbar beach — the kind of place where the partner can spend a slow morning on the sand while the golfer is out on the course, and you reunite for lunch with salt still in your hair. Tavira itself is just along the coast: a Roman bridge, tiled churches, riverside cafés and seafood restaurants that have no idea they’re meant to be in a hurry.

For something more rarefied, Quinta da Ria & Cima Golf near Tavira and the celebrated Monte Rei Golf & Country Club sit in the hills just inland — resorts where the golf and the gardens are equally the point. We’ll match the address to the holiday you want: barefoot and beachy, or polished and quiet.

For the golfer, this is a genuinely special corner of the Algarve, and the courses sit close enough together that you can play a different one each day without long drives. Monte Rei — a Jack Nicklaus Signature design routinely rated among the very finest in Portugal — is the headline round, immaculate and serene. Quinta da Ria & Cima offers two contrasting layouts beside the Ria Formosa nature reserve, with sea views and storks for company. Benamor Golf at Tavira is the friendly, rolling local favourite, kinder on the ego and easy to love.

A little east towards the Spanish border, Castro Marim and Quinta do Vale round out the choice with open, undulating golf and big skies. We’ll book tee times around the two of you — an early round so the day is still young when you’re back, or a relaxed late-morning start. Either way, the non-golfer never has to wait around.

The promise here is romance without effort, and the Eastern Algarve makes it easy. While one of you plays, the other can drift between the lagoon beaches at Cabanas, the boutiques and tile-fronted streets of Tavira, or a long spa afternoon. The hills behind the coast are quietly becoming wine country, and a morning tasting among the vines is a lovely counterpoint to a morning on the fairways.

Then the days converge: a sundowner overlooking the Ria Formosa, fresh tuna and clams by the water, a walk back through Tavira as the lamps come on.
